Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

By dawn, the penthouse suite was swarming with private investigators, clean-up crews, and trusted loyalists brought in under strict secrecy by Richard Vance. The broken glass had been cleared, the unconscious operatives quietly removed and neutralized by Vance’s private security black-ops division, and the bullet-scarred walls patched over.

Richard sat at his executive desk, rubbing his temples, looking twenty years older than he had twenty-four hours ago.

Across the room, Evelyn stood by the window.

She wasn't in her wheelchair. She was standing upright, leaning slightly against the glass pane, watching the sunrise paint the city skyline in shades of gold and bruised purple. Her legs still ached with a dull, persistent burn, but every step she took proved that the paralysis was gone—unlocked by the ancient energy Toby had awakened within her.

Toby sat quietly in a leather armchair, a bowl of fruit and a glass of milk untouched on the side table. His bare feet were now neatly bandaged with sterile gauze by the private physicians.

Richard looked up, his eyes bloodshot and hard. "If the Syndicate knows the bloodline survived, they won't send hit squads anymore. They'll use their influence on the global markets, freeze our corporate assets, and brand the Vance family as fugitives. They control the media, the intelligence agencies, and half the governments on this continent."

"Let them try," Evelyn said, turning away from the window. Her voice was no longer that of a broken, grieving woman trapped in a chair. It carried the iron will of the true Vance matriarch. "For twelve years, I lived in a cage built on lies. They took my legs, they took my parents, and they stole our history. It ends today."

Richard looked at his sister, then nodded slowly. He turned to Toby. "The archive room... there are documents in the hidden safe. Ledger entries from forty years ago, detailing every corporation the Syndicate used to launder money and silence our family. But the safe requires a dual biometric authorization—my thumbprint, and a bloodline resonance match."

Toby stood up from the armchair. He walked over to the biometric panel beside the hidden archive door.

Without hesitation, he pressed his thumb against the glass scanner. Then, using a small surgical lancet from the medical tray on the table, he pressed a drop of his own blood onto the optical sensor.

The panel flashed green. The heavy steel door smoothly unlocked and swung open.

Richard stood up, walking into the vault behind the boy. On the central pedestal sat a heavy, lead-lined metal briefcase that had remained unopened for half a century.

Toby reached out and flipped the latches. Inside lay a collection of original holographic data drives, signed confessions from former board members, and the absolute proof of the Syndicate's global conspiracy.

"This is everything," Toby said quietly, looking at Richard and Evelyn. "With this, we can dismantle their entire empire from the inside out. But to do it, we have to go to the source."

"Where?" Richard asked.

"The old estate across the river," Toby replied, his eyes narrowing. "Where Elena was born. That’s where the final key to the bloodline is hidden—and where the head of the Syndicate is waiting for us."

Evelyn walked into the vault, standing tall beside Toby and her brother. She looked down at the briefcase of secrets, then raised her chin with fierce determination.

"Then let’s go home," she said.
