Chapter 3 - The Secret of the Ridge

"Lies," Richard whispered, though the conviction had completely drained from his voice, leaving behind only raw, desperate panic. He lowered the gun by an inch, staring at the boy’s face under the harsh archive lights—really staring at him.
The shape of the jawline. The curve of the dark eyebrows. The peculiar, piercing stillness in the eyes.
It was the face of Clara Vance, brought back through time like an unerasable ghost.
"Who are you?" Richard demanded, his voice cracking slightly.
"My name is Toby," the boy replied, turning back to face the painting of the woman with the pearls. "And Elena was my grandmother. Twenty-five years ago, she was cast out of this family, stripped of her inheritance, and driven into the slums across the river—the Ridge—because she refused to hand over the family's true legacy to your father."
Evelyn gripped the wheels of her chair, rolling closer, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Legacy? What legacy? The Vance empire is built on real estate, tech investments, and shipping. There is no hidden legacy!"
"There is," Toby said calmly. "The Vance fortune wasn't built on business acumen. It was built on medicine—on a rare, hereditary gift of physiological regeneration that our bloodline has carried for centuries. A gift that allows the body to repair tissue, mend bones, and reverse paralysis through focused bio-electric resonance."
He pointed a small, dusty finger at Evelyn's legs. "Your mother knew it. That’s why she tried to pass the knowledge down to Elena instead of Richard. But Richard’s father—our grandfather—feared what would happen if the world found out. He declared Elena unstable, staged a scandal, threw her out into the streets, and rewrote the family history to ensure you two would inherit the empire believing you were ordinary mortals, bound by the fragile limits of modern surgery."
Richard slammed his fist against the mahogany desk, rattling a stack of old files. "Enough of these fairy tales! You think you can walk in here with some absurd bloodline myth and steal everything we’ve built?"
"I don't want your money, Richard," Toby said, turning to face him with absolute indifference to the threat of the weapon. "I came because the gift is dying. When Elena died in the cold rain three nights ago in the slums, she made me promise to deliver one message to the last true bloodline carriers: The debt must be paid. Your paralysis, Evelyn, wasn't caused by the car crash. The crash only triggered a genetic block that your grandfather’s doctors engineered into your DNA to keep the power suppressed."
Evelyn stared at him, her mind spinning into an abyss of horror and revelation. "Engineered... my own family did this to me?"
"They made you believe you were broken so you would never look for the truth," Toby said.
Suddenly, a loud, shrill beep echoed through the penthouse suite outside the secure vault.
Richard spun around, pressing a button on the intercom panel by the door. A frantic voice crackled through the speaker: “Mr. Vance! We have a security breach! Multiple unidentified units have breached the perimeter fence on the east side! They’re bypassing the gate codes—they’re coming through the service elevators!”
Richard’s face turned the color of ash. He looked from the intercom to Toby, then back to the open vault door.
"They found us," Richard whispered, his hands trembling as he shoved the gun into his jacket pocket. "The board... or the Syndicate. They’ve been tracking anyone connected to the old bloodline for decades."

Toby didn't look panicked. He simply walked toward the vault door, stepping out into the main suite.
"Stay behind me," Toby said over his shoulder, his voice carrying an authority that made the billionaire CEO and his paralyzed sister obey without a single word of argument.
