Chapter 9 - The Duchess’s Gala

Two years later.

The grand ballroom of the Pierre Hotel was once again illuminated by a thousand glittering crystal chandeliers.

It was the annual Metropolitan Children's Health Gala—the very same event where, three years ago, a desperate waitress in cheap non-slip shoes had taken three bullets for a stranger’s child.

Tonight, the ballroom looked completely different.

There were no whispers of mob wars, no hidden gunmen in the shadows, and no corrupt billionaires using charity to hide their sins.

The room was filled with doctors, community leaders, philanthropists, and families.

At the main table near the stage sat Toby, Leo—now nine years old and wearing a handsome dark suit—and tiny two-year-old Isabella, who was giggling as Matteo showed her how to make paper airplanes out of cloth napkins.

The room went silent as the master of ceremonies stepped up to the podium.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the speaker announced, his voice echoing through the grand hall. "Tonight, we are proud to honor a woman whose courage redefined pediatric emergency care in the State of New York. Please welcome the founder of the Sarah Miller Medical Trust... Mrs. Sarah Caruso."

The entire ballroom stood up, breaking into thunderous, overwhelming applause.

Sarah stepped onto the stage.

She wore a magnificent navy-blue velvet gown that drapes elegantly over her tall frame. She wore no rubies tonight—only a simple silver chain around her neck holding the key to her old apartment in Queens. She moved with effortless grace, her hazel eyes glowing with warmth, confidence, and quiet authority.

She stood at the podium, looking out at the three hundred guests who were standing in her honor.

Beside the stage stood Enzo Caruso. He wore a crisp black tuxedo, his arms crossed over his chest, his dark espresso eyes fixed on his wife with a pride so profound, so immense, that it radiated across the entire room.

Sarah adjusted the microphone, waiting for the applause to die down before she spoke.

"Three years ago," Sarah began, her voice clear, steady, and beautiful, carrying to every corner of the ballroom, "I stood in this very room wearing a stained waitress uniform. I was tired, I was terrified, and I believed that my life was completely invisible to the world."

She looked directly at Enzo, her smile softening into an expression of pure, unadulterated love.

"That night, I learned two things. First, that courage is not something you plan—it is something that rises inside you when you choose to protect what is innocent. And second... that even in the darkest, most dangerous corners of this city, love can build a fortress that no bullet can ever tear down."

The crowd erupted into another wave of applause, many guests wiping tears from their eyes.

Sarah stepped down from the podium, ignoring the photographers and news cameras, and walked straight into the arms of her husband.

Enzo caught her, lifting her off her feet slightly, kissing her deeply in front of the entire world.

"You own this room, my Duchess," Enzo whispered against her cheek.

"No, Enzo," Sarah smiled softly, holding his face between her hands. "We own our future."
