Chapter 3 - The Wolves at the Gate

Three weeks later.

The gates of the Caruso Estate in Westchester were eighteen feet tall, made of solid wrought iron, and backed by high-voltage wiring and laser surveillance sensors. The main mansion was a sprawling limestone estate surrounded by acres of thick pine forest, looking more like a European fortress than a American home.

Sarah sat in a wheelchair near the grand French doors of the library, looking out at the manicured gardens.

Her wounds were healing, but the physical recovery was agonizingly slow. Her stomach still felt tight and bruised, her shoulder was immobilized in a sleek black sling, and she walked with a pronounced limp that required daily physical therapy.

The soft sound of footsteps made her turn her head.

Leo walked into the room, carrying a tray with two small porcelain cups of warm cocoa. He moved cautiously, stepping with extreme care so as not to spill a single drop.

"I brought you tea," Leo said softly, stopping beside her wheelchair. "Uncle Matteo said I could bring it if I didn't run."

A genuine, warm smile broke across Sarah’s face—the first real smile she had felt in weeks. "Thank you, Leo. That’s very sweet of you."

Leo set the tray on the coffee table, then looked up at her sling with wide, serious eyes. "Does it still hurt a lot?"

"A little bit," Sarah admitted, taking one of the cups. "But every day it gets better."

Leo reached into his pocket and pulled out his battered Optimus Prime toy, setting it gently in her lap. "You can keep him for a while. He helps people get strong."

Sarah’s chest tightened with a profound, overwhelming warmth. She reached out with her good hand and gently cupped the little boy’s cheek. "I don't need Optimus, buddy. I have you."

"Leo. Go to your studies."

The deep, authoritative voice echoed from the doorway.

Enzo stood there, wearing a dark gray bespoke suit, holding a leather briefcase. His face was rigid, devoid of warmth, but Sarah noticed his eyes linger on his son for a soft, fleeting second before turning to her.

Leo nodded quickly, gave Sarah a quick, gentle hug around her waist, and trotted out of the library.

Enzo walked into the room, setting his briefcase on the heavy oak desk. "The Moretti family has requested a sit-down."

Sarah’s smile vanished instantly. "A sit-down?"

"A formal meeting of the Five Families," Enzo explained, pouring himself a glass of straight bourbon from a crystal decanter. "Salvatore Moretti is claiming that I violated syndicate law by executing his assassin without bringing the matter to the Commission first."

"He tried to kill a six-year-old child!" Sarah said indignantly, her voice rising. "He sent a man with a gun into a crowded ballroom!"

"And he failed," Enzo said, taking a sip of his drink. "In our world, failure creates desperation. Salvatore knows that if the Commission finds him guilty of targeting a child, he will be stripped of his territory. So he is going to attack my credibility instead."

He turned to face Sarah, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute seriousness.

"He has demanded that you attend the dinner tonight at the Grand Prospect Hall."

Sarah froze. "Me? Why?"

"Because he believes you are a plant," Enzo stated coldly. "He told the Commission that a twenty-four-year-old waitress taking three bullets for a stranger’s child is a statistical impossibility. He claims you were hired by an outside agency—perhaps the FBI, or a rival syndicate from Chicago—to infiltrate my house."

Sarah let out a dry, disbelieving laugh. "I was making nine dollars an hour plus tips! I didn't even have enough money to buy my brother's insulin! How could I be a plant?!"

"Logic does not matter to desperate men, Sarah," Enzo said, walking over to stand directly in front of her wheelchair. "What matters is performance. Tonight, three hundred members of the New York underworld will be watching you. They will look for fear, for hesitation, for any sign that you do not belong at my side."

He reached down, taking her chin between his long, powerful fingers, tilting her face up so she was forced to look directly into his cold, dark gaze.

"If you show weakness, they will see an opening. If they see an opening, they will strike," Enzo warned softly. "Tonight, Sarah, you do not play the victim. You step into that hall as the Duchess of the Caruso family. You wear the diamonds, you wear the name, and you make them fear the woman who survived three bullets and spat them back."

Sarah stared at him. For weeks, she had viewed Enzo as her captor, a powerful man who had rewritten her life without her permission. But looking at him now, she saw the terrifying truth: he was giving her the only weapon that could keep her and Toby alive in his brutal world.

She swallowed hard, her chin lifting slightly against his fingers.

"Call the stylist, Enzo," Sarah said, her voice dropping into a quiet, firm register. "And tell them to bring a red dress."
