Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Moretti Empire

The betrayal of Julian was the final catalyst.
With Julian’s private encrypted server seized by Enzo’s tech team, the complete financial network of the Moretti family was exposed—every bribe paid to city officials, every illegal shipping channel, and every safehouse location across the tri-state area.
Enzo did not wait for the Commission to act.
Over the next forty-eight hours, the city of New York experienced a quiet, terrifying purge.
One by one, the Moretti family’s front companies were seized, their warehouses burnt to the ground, and their senior captains arrested by federal authorities using anonymous financial evidence leaked directly from Julian's servers.
On Saturday night, the final blow fell.
Salvatore Moretti sat alone in the basement of a abandoned bakery in Queens—his last remaining safehouse. He was surrounded by empty whiskey bottles, his expensive suit ruined, his empire destroyed in less than two days.
The heavy iron door of the basement was blown off its hinges with a deafening BOOM.
Smoke poured into the room.
Through the haze walked Enzo Caruso, flanked by Matteo and ten heavily armed soldiers.
Salvatore scrambled backward, grabbing a revolver from the table with trembling hands. "Keep back! Keep back, Lorenzo! I'll shoot!"
Enzo didn't even draw his weapon. He walked straight up to the table, snatched the revolver from Salvatore’s weak grip, and slapped him across the face with enough force to knock the fat man off his chair onto the filthy floor.
Salvatore lay on his back, coughing blood, staring up at Enzo like a dying rat.
"Please... Lorenzo..." Salvatore whimpered, shedding pathetic tears. "We... we were partners for twenty years... spare me..."
"Partners do not shoot six-year-old boys, Salvatore," Enzo said, looking down at him with absolute disgust.
Enzo stepped aside.
From the dark doorway, Sarah walked into the basement.
She wore a dark wool coat over a simple sweater, her hands tucked into her pockets. She moved with no limp, her posture straight, her eyes bright and clear in the dim light.
Salvatore stared at her in shock. "You..."
Sarah walked over, stopping right beside Enzo. She looked down at the man who had tried to murder Leo, the man who had ordered three bullets into her chest, the man who had tried to ruin her life.
She didn't feel anger anymore. She felt only a cold, magnificent clarity.
"You called me a miracle, Mr. Moretti," Sarah spoke softly, her voice echoing in the damp basement. "You said no civilian woman would take three bullets for a child she didn't know."
She leaned down, pulling a sleek black fountain pen from her pocket—the same pen Julian had tried to make her use—and dropped it onto Salvatore’s chest.
"You were wrong," Sarah whispered. "A mother will do anything to protect her child. And you made the fatal mistake of threatening mine."
Enzo looked at Sarah, a proud, lethal smile touching his lips. He raised his hand, gesturing to Matteo.
"Take him away," Enzo ordered smoothly. "The federal marshals are waiting outside. Salvatore Moretti will spend the rest of his miserable life in a maximum-security cell in Colorado."

As the enforcers dragged the screaming, weeping mob boss out into the night, Enzo wrapped his arm around Sarah’s waist, pulling her close against his side.
"It's over, Sarah," Enzo whispered, pressing his lips against her temple. "The city is clean."
