Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Garden

The victory at the Grand Prospect Hall secured Sarah’s position within the Caruso empire, but it also painted an even larger target on her back.

Two weeks later, the atmosphere at the Westchester estate was quiet, but the air was thick with unseen tension.

Sarah was sitting in the sunny glass conservatory, supervising Leo’s homework while Toby sat nearby, reviewing his online college courses on a high-end laptop Enzo had purchased for him.

"Look, Sarah!" Leo squeaked, holding up a drawing of a large stone house surrounded by four figures: Enzo, Leo, Sarah, and Toby. Above them, he had drawn a crude blue robot with wings. "It's us!"

Sarah felt a deep, profound ache in her chest. Over the past month, she had come to love this little boy with every fiber of her being. He wasn't just the child she had saved; he was her son in every way that mattered.

"It's beautiful, Leo," Sarah smiled, kissing the top of his head. "We're going to put it on the refrigerator in the main kitchen."

"Mrs. Caruso?"

Sarah turned around. Standing at the entrance of the conservatory was Julian, Enzo’s chief financial advisor and personal lawyer. Julian was a tall, immaculate man in his early fortys, wearing a crisp navy suit, rimless glasses, and carrying a leather briefcase. He had been with the Caruso family for fifteen years, managing their legal corporations and international trusts.

"Yes, Julian?" Sarah asked politely.

"Mr. Caruso has requested that you review these asset transfer documents," Julian said, walking over and placing a thick stack of legal papers on the marble table. "In light of recent events, he is transferring twenty percent of the Caruso Logistics holding shares directly into your name to secure your financial independence."

Toby looked up from his laptop, frowning slightly. "Why would he do that now?"

"It is standard family protocol, young man," Julian replied smoothly, offering a polite, professional smile. "Mrs. Caruso proved her loyalty to the family. She deserves her rightful share of the estate."

Sarah picked up the heavy fountain pen Julian offered her. She looked down at the signature line.

Sarah Miller Caruso.

She pressed the nib of the pen against the paper.

Then she froze.

Her eyes, naturally sharp from years of reading complex medical bill contracts and lease fine print, caught a single word buried in the middle of Paragraph 14 on page thirty-two.

...pursuant to the terms of the irrevocable testamentary trust, upon the execution of this transfer, full custodial guardianship of minor heir Leo Caruso shall be reassigned exclusively to the designated secondary trustee...

Sarah’s eyes narrowed instantly. She flipped back to page one, scanning the dense legalese with frantic speed.

This wasn't an asset transfer. It was a custodial surrender document. If she signed this paper, she was legally signing away Enzo’s parental rights over Leo in the event of Enzo's death—and assigning full guardianship to Julian.

"Julian," Sarah said, her voice dropping into a dangerously calm register.

"Yes, Mrs. Caruso?"

"Why does Paragraph 14 give you exclusive guardianship over Leo?"

Julian’s polite smile stiffened for a fraction of a second. "Ah... that is simply a standard contingent clause, Mrs. Caruso. In the event of an emergency, someone must manage the trust until Leo reaches legal age."

"Enzo didn't order this document, did he?" Sarah asked, standing up slowly, setting the fountain pen down on the marble table.

Julian’s eyes turned cold behind his rimless glasses. The polite advisor vanished, replaced by a sharp, calculating predator.

"You're smarter than I thought, waitress," Julian whispered softly, reaching into his jacket.

"TOBY! GET LEO BEHIND THE DESK!" Sarah screamed.

Before Julian could pull his weapon, Sarah grabbed the heavy bronze vase sitting on the conservatory table and hurled it with all her strength directly at his face.

CRASH!

The heavy bronze struck Julian across the cheek, shattering his glasses and sending him staggering backward onto the marble floor.

"MATTEO!" Sarah yelled at the top of her lungs, stepping in front of Toby and Leo, holding a sharp piece of shattered glass from the table.

The glass doors of the conservatory were kicked open. Matteo and three armed guards flooded into the room, their weapons drawn and raised within two seconds.

Julian lay on the floor, bleeding from his cheek, staring up at the barrels of four automatic pistols.

Ten minutes later, Enzo arrived via helicopter, landing on the estate’s front lawn.

He stormed into the conservatory like a dark hurricane, his face contorted in pure, lethal rage. He didn't look at Julian, who was bound to a chair in the corner with bloody tape over his mouth. He walked straight to Sarah, grabbing her by her shoulders, his hands frantic as he checked her body for injuries.

"Are you hurt?! Did he touch you?!" Enzo demanded, his dark eyes wide with uncharacteristic panic.

"I'm fine, Enzo," Sarah panted, her heart still racing. "Leo and Toby are safe in the panic room."

She picked up the legal document from the table and shoved it into Enzo’s chest.

"Julian was working with Moretti," Sarah declared, her voice trembling with rage. "He tried to trick me into signing away Leo’s custody rights so that if Moretti killed you, Julian would take control of the entire Caruso estate through the trust!"

Enzo looked down at the document, scanning the paragraph Sarah had flagged.

The air in the room seemed to drop below freezing.

Enzo slowly turned around, walking toward Julian. He didn't yell. He didn't raise his fist. He pulled a small, suppressed pistol from his belt, screwed on the silencer with terrifyingly steady hands, and looked down at the man who had been his advisor for fifteen years.

"You tried to use my wife to steal my son," Enzo whispered softly.

Julian shook his head frantically behind the tape, his eyes wide with pathetic, terrified pleading.

THWIP.

A single shot echoed softly in the quiet conservatory.

May you like

Enzo turned back to Sarah, lowering the weapon, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a profound, terrifying, and beautiful devotion.

"You saved my family again, Sarah," Enzo whispered.
