Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

One year later.

The autumn leaves painted the Westchester hills in vibrant shades of gold, orange, and crimson.

The grand dining room of the Caruso Estate was filled with light, music, and the heavenly scent of a traditional Italian feast.

It was Sarah’s twenty-sixth birthday.

At the long mahogany table sat the new inner circle of the Caruso family—no longer ruthless mobsters or corrupt advisors, but trusted friends, legitimate business partners, and family. Toby sat near the head of the table, talking excitedly about his second year at Columbia University, where he was studying bio-engineering. Matteo, now the chief of estate security, sat beside him, laughing heartedly as he demonstrated how to properly cut a Florentine steak.

In a soft, wooden cradle near the fireplace, three-month-old Isabella Caruso slept peacefully, wrapped in a pink cashmere blanket.

Sarah stood near the wide bay window, holding a glass of sparkling water, watching her family with a quiet, profound joy.

Enzo walked up behind her, sliding his arms around her waist, resting his chin gently on her shoulder.

"Happy birthday, my Duchess," Enzo whispered softly into her hair.

Sarah leaned back against his solid chest, covering his hands with hers. "I have everything I ever dreamed of, Enzo. I don't need anything else."

Enzo reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, old, worn velvet box. He held it out in front of her.

Sarah frowned slightly. "What's this?"

"Open it," Enzo smiled.

Sarah opened the worn velvet box. Inside lay a simple, inexpensive silver key on a faded blue ribbon.

Her breath hitched in her throat. She recognized that key instantly.

It was the key to her old, tiny apartment in Astoria, Queens—the apartment with the leaking ceiling, the broken heater, and the unpaid rent notices that had kept her awake at night two years ago.

"How... how do you have this?" Sarah whispered, looking up at him in shock.

"I bought the entire apartment building six months ago," Enzo explained gently, his dark eyes filled with deep, emotional warmth. "I had the room completely restored, but I kept the original door lock. I wanted you to have the key."

Sarah stared at the small silver key, tears brimming in her eyes.

"Why?" she asked softly.

"To remind us where the miracle began," Enzo murmured, wrapping his arms tighter around her. "To remind us that the girl who walked out of that apartment with nothing in her pockets ended up giving this entire family a heart."

Sarah picked up the key, pressing it against her lips, before turning around in his arms and looking up at her husband—the man who had started as a terrifying shadow in a hotel ballroom and had become her sanctuary, her partner, and her soulmate.

"I love you, Lorenzo Caruso," Sarah whispered, her voice ringing with absolute certainty.

"I loved you the moment you bled for my son, Sarah Caruso," Enzo replied, leaning down to capture her lips in a deep, passionate kiss.
