Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Before she could fully close the chapter on her past, there was one final duty Clara had to perform.
The visiting room at the maximum-security federal prison was sterile and smelled of industrial bleach. Clara sat behind the thick plexiglass window, her hands folded neatly on the counter.
The heavy steel door on the opposite side opened, and Nathaniel Harrington was led in by two guards.
The transformation was shocking. The perfectly coiffed, arrogant billionaire was gone. In his place was a hollow, gray-haired man in an orange jumpsuit. His eyes were sunken, surrounded by deep lines of stress and defeat. He looked twenty years older.
He sat down heavily and picked up the phone. Clara did the same.
"You look well," Nathaniel said, his voice raspy, laced with a bitter, toxic resentment. "I suppose my money suited you after all."
"None of the money I have belongs to you, Nathaniel," Clara said calmly, her voice steady and devoid of anger. "Adriano and I bought the remnants of your company at auction for pennies on the dollar. We turned the Harrington Foundation into a fully transparent charity. Your name has been completely erased from the building."
Nathaniel’s jaw clenched, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the receiver. "The boy. He’s mine. I saw the pictures in the papers. He looks just like I did when I was a kid. You hid my heir from me!"
Clara let out a soft, pitying laugh. "Your heir? You threw us out into a blizzard to die, Nathaniel. You didn't want an heir. You wanted a trophy, and when the trophy became inconvenient, you discarded it."
She leaned closer to the glass, her gaze piercing through him. "Leo is not a Harrington. He has never known your name, and he never will. He has a father. A man who loves him, who protected him, and who taught him how to be a real man, not a coward who hides behind wealth and violence."

"I will appeal," Nathaniel hissed, slamming his hand against the glass. "I will get out, and I will take everything from you!"
"You will die in this room, Nathaniel," Clara said softly, standing up. She hung up the phone, turned her back on him, and walked away, his muffled, enraged screams fading into the heavy silence of the prison corridor. She never looked back.
