Chapter 6 - The Fall of an Empire

The safehouse in the Appalachian mountains was built like a military bunker. For two days, Clara sat by the secure satellite phone, her knuckles white, holding Leo tightly against her side. The television news in the background was a chaotic montage of breaking reports.

A massive shootout in downtown Manhattan. A prominent billionaire’s residence raided by the FBI. Allegations of human trafficking, corporate espionage, and murder-for-hire tied directly to Nathaniel Harrington.

Finally, on the third night, the phone rang.

Clara snatched it up. "Adriano?"

"It’s over, Clara," his voice came through, exhausted, raspy, but unbroken. "Nathaniel is finished."

A sob of pure relief escaped her lips. "Are you hurt? Where are you?"

"I’m fine. A few scratches. Nathaniel tried to flee the country on his private jet. My men intercepted him at Teterboro Airport before the feds could get to him. He’s currently sitting in a holding cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. The FBI found his offshore servers, his hit-contracts, everything. He’s looking at life without parole."

"And Victoria?"

"She cut a deal," Adriano said, a tone of disgust in his voice. "She turned state's evidence against him to save herself from the maximum sentence. She’ll spend the next ten years in a minimum-security facility. Their empire is gone, Clara. The board declared bankruptcy this morning. Harrington Global is no more."

Clara leaned her head back against the wall, tears streaming down her face. Nine years. Nine long years of hiding, of fear, of transforming herself from a victim into a warrior. It was finally over.

"Come home, Clara," Adriano said softly. "Come home to me."
