Chapter 2 - The Sanctuary of the Wolf

When Clara opened her eyes, the biting cold was gone. Instead, the scent of expensive cedarwood, leather, and faint antiseptic filled the air. She was lying in an enormous, plush bed draped in dark silk sheets. A crackling fire danced in a massive stone fireplace across the room.
She gasped, immediately reaching for her stomach. It was flat.
"Calm down, Piccola," a smooth, authoritative voice said from the shadows near the window.
Clara panicked, sitting up abruptly. A sharp pain shot through her abdomen, and she winced, noticing she was wearing a soft, clean cotton gown. "Where is my baby? Where is he?!"
The man from the blizzard stepped into the firelight. Stripped of his heavy overcoat, his presence was even more intimidating. He wore a black dress shirt with the top buttons undone, revealing a glimpse of a dark, intricate tattoo crawling up his neck.
"He is safe. He is in the next room with a private pediatrician," the man said. He walked over to the bedside, carrying a crystal glass of water, and handed it to her. "You gave birth three hours ago. A boy. Healthy, despite his mother's foolishness in walking through a blizzard in a silk dress."
Clara drank the water greedily, tears of relief spilling down her cheeks. "Thank you. Oh God, thank you. Who... who are you? Where am I?"
The man studied her with an intensity that made her breath hitch. "You are in my estate in upstate New York. Safe from anyone who might wish you harm. As for who I am... my name is Adriano Moretti."
Clara’s glass froze halfway to her lips. Adriano Moretti. Even in her sheltered life as a billionaire’s wife, she knew that name. He was the whispered myth of the East Coast—the undisputed Don of the Moretti Crime Syndicate. A man who controlled the docks, the unions, and the politicians. A man who was said to have no mercy.
"You're... the Mafia boss," she whispered, pulling the sheets closer to her chest.
Adriano let out a low, dry chuckle that didn't reach his eyes. "I am a businessman, Clara. And right now, my business is ensuring that the woman who was thrown out like trash by Nathaniel Harrington recovers. My men recognized you. The whole city knows the face of Harrington's 'charity trophy' wife."
Clara looked down, shame washing over her. "He wanted me gone. He has Victoria now. He told me if I ever claimed the baby was his, he would destroy me."
Adriano's expression darkened, his jaw tightening until a muscle leaped in his cheek. There was a sudden, terrifying aura of violence radiating from him. "Nathaniel Harrington is a coward who fights with lawyers and press releases. He thinks his money makes him untouchable. He forgets that empires built on paper can be burned to the ground."
He stepped closer, leaning over the bed. The scent of him—spicy cologne and raw power—enveloped her. "Listen to me carefully, Clara. From this moment on, you and your son do not exist to the world. If you stay here, under my protection, I will give you a new life. A new identity. But in exchange, you must trust me completely. Do you understand?"
Clara looked into his gray eyes and saw no deceit. Only a fierce, protective iron will. She thought of Nathaniel's betrayal, of Victoria's laugh, and she knew she could never go back.

"I understand," she said softly. "What do I call my son?"
Adriano smiled, a genuine, surprisingly warm expression that transformed his rugged face. "Leo. It means lion. Because he survived the storm."
