Chapter 4 - The Shadow War

By the fifth year, the battle between Harrington Global and the Moretti Syndicate had spilled into the open, masked as a bitter corporate rivalry. To the public, it was a battle of gentrification versus tradition in the Brooklyn shipyards. But behind closed doors, it was a bloodbath of stock manipulation, hijacked supply lines, and broken alliances.

Clara sat at the head of the mahogany conference table in Adriano’s private city office, a penthouse hidden behind the facade of an import-export business. She wore a sharp, tailored black power suit, her blonde hair pulled back into a flawless, severe bun.

"Nathaniel has overleveraged himself," Clara explained, pointing a laser pointer at a digital spreadsheet projected on the wall. "He took out a three-billion-dollar loan from a Swiss syndicate to fund the port acquisition. He’s counting on the revenue from the new automated cranes to pay the first dividend next month."

Adriano, sitting at the side, smoking a cigar, watched her with pride. Beside him, his underboss, Matteo, looked impressed.

"But the cranes require specialized union technicians to operate," Clara continued, a cold smile touching her lips. "Technicians whose union president happens to be on Adriano's payroll. We call a strike tomorrow morning. The ports freeze. The revenue drops to zero. Nathaniel misses his payment, and the Swiss syndicate calls in the entire loan."

"Brilliant," Matteo muttered. "But what about Victoria? Her family's bank is backing the secondary insurance."

"Victoria is vain," Clara said, her voice dropping an octave. "She’s been using her position at the bank to skim funds to maintain her lavish lifestyle. I’ve found the offshore accounts. Once the port freezes, we leak the audit to the federal regulators. She won't just be broke; she'll be looking at twenty years in a federal penitentiary."

Adriano stood up, walking over to Clara and placing a heavy, supportive hand on her shoulder. "You heard her. Execute the plan. No mistakes."

"Yes, Boss," Matteo nodded, exiting the room quickly.

Once they were alone, Adriano pulled Clara into his arms, burying his face in her neck. "You are terrifying when you are vengeful, do you know that?"

"I learned from the best," she teased, though her eyes remained focused on the screen. "I want him to feel it, Adriano. I want him to feel the exact moment the ground disappears beneath his feet, just like I did."

"He will," Adriano promised, kissing her deeply. "But remember, Nathaniel is a cornered rat. When rats are cornered, they bite. We must ensure Leo is completely insulated."

"He’s at the safehouse in Maine with four of your best men," Clara said, though a sudden chill ran down her spine. "He’s safe."
