Chapter 5 - The Rat Bites Back

It was the seventh year when the trap snapped shut, but not without a violent backlash.

Clara’s strategy had worked flawlessly. Harrington Global’s stock had plummeted forty percent in a single week. The strike had paralyzed the ports, and Victoria Kensington had been indicted by a grand jury for wire fraud and embezzlement, her tearful mugshot plastering every tabloid in the country.

Clara stood in the kitchen of their Manhattan brownstone—a highly secured property—making breakfast for seven-year-old Leo. Leo was the spitting image of his mother, but he had inherited Adriano’s sharp intellect and fierce protectiveness.

"Mom, can Uncle Adriano take me to the boxing gym today?" Leo asked, pouring maple syrup over his pancakes. He called Adriano 'Uncle', but everyone in the household knew the bond they shared was that of a father and son.

"We’ll see, Leo. He’s very busy today," Clara said, kissing his forehead.

Suddenly, the front door burst open. Adriano strode in, his face pale, a look of pure, unadulterated fury in his eyes that Clara had never seen before. Behind him, three bodyguards had their weapons drawn.

"Clara, get the boy. Now," Adriano commanded, his voice tight.

"What? What happened?"

"Nathaniel found out," Adriano said, walking over and grabbing Leo, lifting him into his arms. "He intercepted a shell company we used to short his stock. He tracked the digital signature back to one of my old servers. He knows you're alive, Clara. And he knows about Leo."

Clara’s blood ran cold. The spatula fell from her hand, clattering against the stove. "Does he know... does he know Leo is his?"

"He suspects," Adriano said, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "My men just intercepted a team of mercenaries outside the perimeter. Nathaniel didn't send lawyers. He sent killers. He wants to wipe the slate clean. If you and the boy die, his secrets die with you, and he can claim your estate as your legal husband since the divorce was never finalized."

Before Clara could process the horror, the sound of shattered glass echoed from the living room.

"Down!" Adriano roared, throwing himself over Clara and Leo as a volley of automatic gunfire ripped through the walls, shredding the plaster and exploding the kitchen cabinets.

The bodyguards returned fire, the deafening roar of gunshots filling the house. Smoke and dust choked the air. Adriano pulled a sleek black handgun from his waistband, his face a mask of cold, calculated violence.

"Matteo!" Adriano shouted over the noise. "Get them to the armored transport in the basement! Now!"

"Adriano, no! Come with us!" Clara screamed, grabbing his shirt as tears blurred her vision.

"I’m ending this today, Clara," Adriano said, his gray eyes locking onto hers with absolute finality. He leaned down and kissed her fiercely. "I love you. Protect our son. I will see you in hell or in victory."

He pushed her toward Matteo, turned around, and stepped into the gunfire, firing with lethal, terrifying precision.
