Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Architect

Inside the federal holding facility in downtown Boston, the sterile white walls of the visitor booth felt like a concrete tomb. Celeste Waverly sat behind the thick safety glass, dressed in standard inmate blues, her hair unstyled and her face stripped of the expensive cosmetics she had once used as armor.

The heavy metal door clicked open, and her defense attorney stepped in, dropping a thick sheaf of legal briefs onto the metal table with a frustrated sigh.

"The federal prosecutor has rejected our insanity plea outright, Celeste," her lawyer said, refusing to meet her eyes. "And worse—Beatrice Thorne has officially signed a non-prosecution agreement in exchange for full testimony regarding the pharmaceutical compound swap at Brigham seventeen years ago."

Celeste’s eyes flared with sudden, desperate fury. "She’s a liar! She took the money, she executed the protocol, she has as much blood on her hands as I do!"

"Her cooperation is fully corroborated by the Cayman Island wire receipts Marcus Vance handed over to the FBI," her lawyer replied coldly. "The jury won't even need to deliberate. We’re looking at a minimum of twenty-five years without parole on the racketeering and child endangerment charges alone."

Celeste stared at her reflection in the glass partition. For her entire life, she had believed that power belonged to those ruthless enough to take it, to orchestrate shadows and discard lives like pawns on a chessboard. Now, looking at the broken reflection of the woman who had thought herself untouchable, she realized the trap she had built for others had finally closed permanently around her.
