Chapter 4 - The Siege of Cape Cod

The afternoon sun beat down on the weathered shingles of the Cape Cod safe house, casting long, peaceful shadows across the wooden deck. Inside, Mara was resting comfortably while June Harper fed formula to the baby boy—Grant’s son—who suckled greedily with tiny, eager movements.

Grant sat at the kitchen island, reviewing Marcus’s live updates on his laptop.

“She’s mobilizing,” Marcus’s text read. “Invoking Clause 4 of the corporate charter to declare you mentally incapacitated. She’s chartered a private Sikorsky helicopter out of Logan Airport. ETA to your coordinates: forty-five minutes. She’s bringing four private security contractors from Apex Tactical.”

Grant looked up, meeting June Harper’s weathered gaze across the room.

“They’re coming, June,” Grant said quietly.

June didn't flinch. She gently burped the baby boy, laid him in his bassinet, and walked over to the hallway closet. She opened a hidden wall panel secured by a digital keypad, punched in a six-digit code, and pulled out two heavy, matte-black Sig Sauer tactical shotguns alongside a case of ammunition.

“Your father was a paranoid man, Grant,” June said calmly, sliding shells into the chamber with a satisfying clack-chack. “He knew Celeste was a viper long before Mara ever entered this family. He built this house with reinforced steel window frames and satellite-jamming arrays. If they want to take these babies, they’re going to have to blast their way through a federal fortress.”

“We aren't going to shoot my sister, June,” Grant sighed, rubbing his temples. “As satisfying as that sounds, it plays right into her hands. She wants to paint me as an unstable, violent lunatic.”

“Then what’s your play, Mr. Waverly?” Toby asked, walking into the kitchen from the perimeter check with a high-powered thermal tablet in his hand. “Because I’m tracking two unmarked black SUVs pulling up our access road right now, and a helicopter is circling overhead. They’re landing in the clearing behind the guest house.”

Grant stood up, smoothing his shirt. He looked toward the bedroom door where Mara was watching him with wide, frightened green eyes. He walked over, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.

“Stay here with the twins,” Grant whispered. “Lock the inner bulkhead door. Let me handle my sister.”

Before Mara could protest, Grant turned, walked to the front entryway, and pulled open the heavy oak door just as heavy boots crunched against the gravel driveway.

Stepping out of the lead SUV was Celeste Waverly, her designer heels sinking slightly into the dirt, flanked by four massive men in tactical gear wearing body armor and carrying automatic rifles.

Celeste stopped ten feet away, her blonde hair whipping in the rotor wash of the descending helicopter behind her. A cold, triumphant smile curved her lips.

“Well, little brother,” Celeste called out, spreading her arms wide as if greeting a prodigal son. “Playing fugitive in a beach shack? Really? Did you honestly think you could hide your little bastard children from the family trust?”

Grant stepped fully out onto the porch, his hands shoved casually into his trouser pockets, his expression devoid of fear.

“You’re trespassing, Celeste,” Grant said, his voice carrying clearly over the roar of the helicopter blades. “And you’re about thirty seconds too late. The federal marshals are already thirty miles out with an arrest warrant for corporate embezzlement, conspiracy, and child endangerment.”

Celeste’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but she recovered quickly, motioning to her lead security contractor. “Grab him. Sedate him if he fights. We’re invoking emergency conservatorship under corporate health bylaws.”

The lead Apex contractor stepped forward, reaching for his tactical cuffs—

Click.

The distinctive, deafening sound of a shotgun being cocked echoed from the second-story window above the porch.

“Take one more step toward Mr. Waverly, son, and I’ll blow your kneecaps off through your Kevlar,” June Harper’s voice rang out, cold and unwavering, as the barrel of a 12-gauge shotgun tracked squarely between the contractor's eyes.

Simultaneously, the rustling of the surrounding pine trees erupted into motion as six federal marshals in full tactical gear stepped out from the woodline, their rifles raised, laser sights painting glowing red dots across Celeste’s private security detail.

“FBI! Federal Marshals! Drop your weapons!” a booming voice commanded from the tree line.

Celeste froze. Her head whipped around, staring in sheer horror as the trap she had laid for Grant snapped shut around her own neck.
