Chapter 2 - THE CONFRONTATION IN THE RAIN

The rain seemed to freeze mid-air as Marcus Vale stood under the flickering headlights of his silver sedan. His tailored suit was rapidly soaking through, but his eyes were locked on the faded photograph in Daniel’s hand.

"You weren't supposed to find her," Marcus repeated, his voice barely audible over the rumbling thunder.

Daniel rose slowly from the wet gravel, placing himself firmly between the attorney and Lily. The grief that had paralyzed him for nine years instantly hardened into a cold, lethal rage.

"Marcus," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You signed her death certificate. My father told me you handled the hospital records yourself. What is the meaning of this?"

Marcus took a step back, his hand instinctively reaching toward his pocket. "Daniel, listen to me. Your father... Charles Whitmore... did what he had to do to protect the family legacy. Emma was going to ruin everything. You were young, blind."

"She was carrying my child!" Daniel roared, stepping out from the shelter. "You told me Lily died in the incubator! You let me bury an empty casket?"

Before Marcus could answer, the sound of approaching sirens echoed in the distance. The police Daniel had called earlier were finally breaking through the flooded roads. Marcus’s eyes darted toward the highway. Realizing he was outnumbered and out of time, he pointed a trembling finger at Daniel.

"This isn't over, Daniel. You think you can just take her? Charles left fail-safes in his will. If the truth comes out, the Whitmore empire crumbles. There are people higher than me who invested in keeping this quiet."

Marcus scrambled back into his sedan and sped off into the night, his tires throwing mud into the air. Daniel didn't chase him. He turned back to Lily, who was watching him with wide, terrified gray eyes. He knelt beside her, gently placing his large hands on her trembling shoulders.

"You're safe now, Lily," Daniel promised, tears mixing with the rain on his face. "I swear to you, no one will ever hurt you again."
