Chapter 8 - The Dawn of a New Era

By morning, the city of Palermo awoke to a transformed political landscape.

The Falcone syndicate was completely gone, its assets, territories, and shipping lines absorbed entirely into the Romano empire under Salvatore’s strict code of conduct.

The human-trafficking rings were permanently disbanded, the victims liberated and provided with financial assistance and safe passage home through Salvatore’s private charitable foundations.

The citizens of Via Marquez gathered near the bakery, watching in amazement as city construction crews—funded directly by the Romano estate—began renovating the entire street, repairing the old buildings, installing new streetlights, and reopening the local pharmacy under community management.

At Saint Jude’s Primary School, the iron gates opened as usual for the morning bell.

A shiny black sedan pulled up to the curb.

The door opened, and Salvatore Romano stepped out, looking regal and commanding in a fresh navy-blue suit. He walked around to the passenger side and opened the door.

Sophia stepped out, wearing a brand-new uniform, her shoes neatly polished, her laces double-knotted. Her backpack was comfortable and properly fitted to her small shoulders.

Sister Clara stood near the entrance, but this time she did not look at Salvatore with terror. She bowed her head respectfully as the Godfather of Palermo walked the little girl to the school gate.

"Have a good day at school, Sophia," Salvatore said gently, kneeling beside her.

Sophia smiled warmly, pulling the silver pocket watch from her pocket and showing it to him. "I didn't have to press the button once today, Uncle Salvatore!"

Salvatore let out a rare, genuine laugh, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "That is because the world has learned to respect you, Piccolina."

Sophia leaned forward and kissed his cheek before turning to run toward her classroom, waving happily to her schoolmates.

Salvatore stood up, watching her until she was safely inside the building.

Antonio walked up beside him, holding a folder of new business contracts. "The High Council has ratified the new territorial boundaries, Don Salvatore. The city is completely peaceful."

Salvatore looked up at the bright morning sky, taking a deep breath of the fresh sea air.

"It is peaceful because we made it safe for the innocent, Antonio," Salvatore said softly. "Let us keep it that way."
