Chapter 2 - The Fire in the Shadow

By noon, news of the encounter on Via Marquez had spread through the underbelly of Palermo like a wildfire fueled by gasoline.

In the lavish, smoke-filled backroom of Ristorante La Quercia, Don Bernardo Falcone sat at the head of a long mahogany table. Falcone was an ambitious, arrogant man in his late fifties, obsessed with expanding his lucrative human-trafficking rings into northern Italy.

Beside him stood Enzo Varone, sweating profusely through his cheap leather jacket, trembling as he recounted what had transpired near the bakery.

"You idiot!" Falcone roared, slamming a crystal wine glass onto the table, shattering it into a hundred glittering shards. "You let Salvatore Romano catch you stalking a child in broad daylight?!"

"I... I didn't know the girl had any connection to him, Don Falcone!" Varone stammered, wringing his hands. "The Benedetti family is broke! The old woman couldn't even pay her pharmacy bill! We were just going to take the girl to settle her father's old debt from five years ago!"

"Salvatore Romano does not care about debts when it comes to children!" Falcone spat, rising from his chair, his eyes wild with frustration. "You know his rule! No drugs, no prostitution, no children! He has ruled this city for twenty years on those three blood laws!"

Before Varone could respond, the heavy reinforced doors of the restaurant were blasted inward with an explosive BANG.

Splintered oak flew through the air as six masked men clad in black tactical gear flooded into the dining room, their silenced submachine guns trained on Falcone’s guards. Before anyone could draw a weapon, Falcone’s eight bodyguards were disarmed, forced to their knees, and restrained with heavy zip-ties.

Salvatore Romano walked calmly through the shattered doorway, stepping over the debris. He wore a crisp dark suit, his silver hair impeccably combed back, holding a unlit Cuban cigar between his fingers.

Behind him walked Antonio, carrying a heavy steel briefcase.

Don Falcone paled, taking a step backward against the wall. "Salvatore... what is the meaning of this outrage?! This is neutral territory under the 1998 Accord!"

"The Accord was burned the moment your dog set his eyes on Sophia Benedetti," Salvatore said smoothly, walking over to the table and pulling out a chair. He sat down, crossing one leg over the other.

Antonio stepped forward, set the steel briefcase on the table, and popped the latches open.

Inside lay stacks of marked hundred-dollar bills totaling exactly five hundred thousand euros—alongside a thick folder containing property deeds to three major shipping docks along the Palermo harbor.

"What... what is this?" Falcone asked, his voice shaking.

"This is the purchase price for your surrender," Salvatore stated flatly. "You will sign over your shipping docks to the Romano family. You will pack your bags, take your men, and leave the island of Sicily by midnight tonight. If you or any of your crew are seen in this province after twelve o'clock, you will be hunted down and eliminated."

Falcone’s face flushed with violent rage. "You are asking me to give up my entire empire for a orphan girl?! You've grown soft, Salvatore! You're an old man hiding behind dead rules!"

Salvatore didn't raise his voice. He slowly stood up, leaned across the table, and grabbed Falcone by his silk tie, pulling the heavy man forward until their foreheads were inches apart.

"That orphan girl's mother saved my life twenty years ago when a hitman put a bullet through my lung in the alley behind Via Marquez," Salvatore growled, his dark eyes burning with an ancient, unstoppable vengeance. "I owed the Benedetti family a debt of blood. And today, your scum threatened my honor."

Salvatore released the tie with a sharp shove, causing Falcone to stumble over his chair.

"You have until midnight, Bernardo," Salvatore said softly, turning his back on them. "Choose your next step very carefully."

As Salvatore walked out of the restaurant, Enzo Varone made a fatal mistake. Panicked and driven by pure desperation, Varone lunged for a hidden pistol concealed under a nearby serving tray.

THWIP. THWIP.

Antonio fired two suppressed rounds from his pistol without even turning his entire body. Varone collapsed instantly across the white tablecloth, his blood soaking into the lace.

Salvatore didn't even pause his stride as he stepped out into the bright afternoon sun.

"Prepare the men, Antonio," Salvatore ordered coldly as he opened the sedan door. "Falcone will not leave quietly. The war has begun."
