Chapter 5 - The Fortress at Cefalù

The Romano estate at Cefalù was an ancient, grand stone fortress built atop a cliff overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Surrounded by high stone walls, private security checkpoints, and state-of-the-art surveillance systems, it was considered the most impregnable stronghold in all of Sicily.
For the first time in her life, Sophia experienced a world devoid of fear, hunger, or cold.
Her grandmother was settled into a luxurious suite on the ground floor, attended to by top medical specialists from Milan. Within three days of proper medication and care, Maria Benedetti was able to sit in a wheelchair, breathing the fresh sea air on the sunlit terrace.
Sophia was given a massive room overlooking the ocean, filled with books, toys, and custom-tailored clothes. Yet, despite her opulent new surroundings, the little girl spent most of her time following Salvatore wherever he went.
Whether he was conducting high-level business meetings in his study, reviewing financial ledgers with his lieutenants, or walking through the olive groves, Sophia was always two steps behind him, holding her silver pocket watch.
The hardened captains of the Romano syndicate—men who managed multi-million-dollar enterprises and enforced violent discipline—were dumbfounded by the transformation in their leader.
Don Salvatore, a man notorious for his cold, unyielding demeanor, would pause high-level strategic discussions simply to help Sophia double-knot her shoelaces or explain how his silver watch worked.
"She has softened him," whispered Captain Bruno, a veteran enforcer, during a meeting in the courtyard.
"No," Antonio corrected him sharply, his eyes fixed on Salvatore, who was gently swinging Sophia on a wooden swing beneath a massive oak tree. "She has given him something worth fighting for. That makes him ten times more dangerous."
One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sea in shades of deep orange and purple, Salvatore sat with Sophia on the terrace.
"Sir?" Sophia asked softly, swinging her small legs over the edge of the stone bench.
"You may call me Uncle Salvatore, Piccolina," he replied gently, setting down his cup of espresso.
"Uncle Salvatore... why did that man smile at me like that?" she asked, her voice dropping into a quiet, haunted whisper. "The man near the fountain?"
Salvatore’s face darkened for a brief second before he regained his composure. He turned to face her, taking her small hands in his.
"Because there are bad men in this world, Sophia," Salvatore explained truthfully, refusing to lie to her. "Men who think they can take whatever they want because they believe no one is strong enough to stop them."
"Are you going to stop them?" she asked, looking up into his eyes.
"I have already stopped them," Salvatore promised softly. "And as long as I breathe, no bad man will ever touch a single hair on your head again."
Sophia smiled, leaning her head against his arm. "I believe you, Uncle Salvatore."
At that moment, Antonio walked onto the terrace, his face grim. He held a secure satellite tablet in his hand.
"Don Salvatore," Antonio said quietly. "We have located Don Falcone. He has bunkered himself inside the old chemical refinery at the docks... and he has brought in fifty mercenaries from the Corsican cartel."

Salvatore gently stroked Sophia’s hair, standing up with absolute calm.
"It is time to finish this, Antonio," Salvatore declared softly. "Assemble the entire family."
