Chapter 7 - The Siege of the Docks

t 1:15 AM, the night sky over the Palermo harbor was shattered by a series of synchronized explosive detonations.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The four heavy steel reinforced gates of the chemical refinery were blown off their hinges simultaneously by explosive charges set by Romano breaching teams.
Immediately following the explosions, flare rockets illuminated the night sky, blinding the Corsican mercenaries defending the perimeter.
Over one hundred Romano soldiers flooded through the breached gates, firing with devastating coordination.
The battle was fierce, intense, and ruthless. The narrow metal catwalks and rusty chemical storage tanks echoed with the thunderous roar of automatic weapons, shattering glass, and heavy explosions.
Salvatore led the central assault team himself. Moving with the discipline of a seasoned military commander, he advanced through the main production hall, neutralizing enemy fighters with lethal accuracy.
"PUSH FORWARD!" Salvatore barked, dropping a fresh magazine into his rifle as he stepped over a fallen barricade.
The Corsican mercenaries, realizing they were completely overwhelmed and outmaneuvered, began to break rank, throwing down their weapons and fleeing toward the rear docks. But Antonio and Bruno had already sealed the escape routes with heavy vehicles, trapping the remaining defenders inside.
Within forty-five minutes, the gunfire inside the refinery dwindled into sporadic single shots as Romano enforcers cleared the remaining rooms.
Salvatore walked into the central control office on the top floor of the refinery.
There, cowering behind a fallen steel desk, sat Don Bernardo Falcone.
His expensive suit was torn and covered in soot, his face pale with absolute terror as he stared up at the man standing in the doorway.
Salvatore stepped into the room, lowering his rifle. He walked slowly over to the desk, looking down at his defeated rival.
"Salvatore... please..." Falcone wept, holding up his shaking hands. "I will give you everything! All my money... my territories... my docks! Just let me live! I will leave Italy forever!"
Salvatore didn't answer immediately. He slowly reached into his pocket, pulled out his unlit Cuban cigar, and lit it with a silver lighter, exhaling a cloud of gray smoke into the cold air.
"You didn't just break the rules, Bernardo," Salvatore said softly, his voice devoid of all emotion. "You tried to destroy the future of a child whose family gave everything to protect mine."
"She is just a girl!" Falcone screamed desperately. "She is nobody!"
Salvatore leaned down, his eyes cold and dark as the deep sea.
"She is a Benedetti," Salvatore stated flatly. "And in Palermo... that makes her royalty."
Salvatore turned his back, walking toward the exit.
"Antonio," Salvatore said calmly.
"Yes, Don Salvatore?"

"Clean the room."
As Salvatore stepped out onto the metal catwalk, a single suppressed shot echoed behind him, signaling the permanent end of the Falcone syndicate.
