Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary

By four o'clock that afternoon, Dr. Rossi had successfully stabilized Nona Maria’s condition.
When Sophia walked home from school, escorted by two discreet Romano guards dressed as civil utility workers, she found her grandmother resting comfortably in a clean, state-of-the-art hospital bed installed directly in their small apartment. A private nurse was busy administering intravenous fluids and proper heart medication.
"Sophia... my sweet child," Maria wept softly, holding out her weak arms as the little girl ran into her embrace. "What happened? Who are these people?"
"It was the gentleman with the silver ring, Nona," Sophia whispered, resting her head against her grandmother's chest. "He walked me to school. He promised you would be okay."
Before Maria could process her granddaughter's words, the apartment door opened, and Salvatore Romano stepped inside. He removed his dark wool hat, holding it respectfully against his chest.
Maria Benedetti’s eyes widened in profound recognition and awe. "Don Salvatore..."
"Rest, Maria," Salvatore said gently, stepping over to the bedside. "You have fought hard enough for this child. You do not need to fight alone anymore."
"I... I could not pay the pharmacy," Maria sobbed, shame coursing through her frail voice. "My son... Mateo’s boy... he left us in debt before he died in that accident. I was so afraid they would take Sophia away from me..."
"Nobody will ever take Sophia," Salvatore promised, his tone ringing with absolute authority. "Her father’s debts are wiped clean. The pharmacy has been purchased by my foundation, and a trust fund of two million euros has been established in Sophia's name."
Maria stared at the feared mafia boss in utter disbelief. "Why... why would you do all this for us, Don Salvatore?"
Salvatore looked down at Sophia, who was holding the silver pocket watch he had given her earlier.
"Because twenty years ago, when I was bleeding out in the gutter, your daughter hid me in her basement for three days while the police searched the streets," Salvatore revealed softly. "She died of fever two years later, and I was in prison, unable to repay the debt. Today, her daughter asked for my help. A Romano never forgets a debt of life, Maria."
Suddenly, the apartment windows shattered inward as heavy gunfire erupted from the street below!
RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!
Glass exploded into thousands of sparkling fragments. The private nurse screamed, dropping to the floor.
Salvatore moved with lightning speed, throwing his broad body over Sophia and Maria, shielding them completely with his heavy torso as bullets tore through the plaster walls, destroying the wooden furniture.
"PROTECT THE DON!" Antonio’s voice roared from the hallway.
Outside on Via Marquez, three dark SUVs belonging to the Falcone syndicate had pulled up, opening fire on the apartment building with automatic rifles in a desperate, suicidal pre-emptive strike.
Salvatore reached into his shoulder holster, pulling a heavy nickel-plated pistol. He looked into Sophia’s wide, terrified eyes.

"Do not be afraid, Piccolina," Salvatore whispered, his voice calm amidst the deafening noise of gunfire. "Stay under the bed with your nona. I will return in a moment."
Salvatore stood up, his eyes turning into twin balls of black fire as he stepped out into the hallway to join the war he had promised.
