Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Crosses

Arthur Sterling’s face turned from red to an unhealthy, mottled purple. "What... what did you say?"
"Marcus Vance found the offshore bank accounts, Arthur," Julian explained pitilessly. "The twelve million dollars you paid to the board members of the Medical Review Board to strip Dr. Marlowe of her license five years ago. The paper trail is complete."
"You... you traitor!" Beatrice shrieked at Julian, her face contorting with aristocratic rage. "I am your mother! Everything I did, I did to protect the Cross family name! That child is defective! He was going to ruin our reputation!"
At that moment, small Noah stepped forward, letting go of Elena’s hand.
He walked directly up to his grandmother, Lady Beatrice. He looked up into her cold, angry eyes.
Noah didn't flinch. He didn't hide. He pulled his tiny plastic toy stethoscope from his pocket, laid it on the edge of her plate, and looked her straight in the eye.
"You are not safe," Noah said, his voice loud, clear, and steady. "You are bad."
Beatrice froze, staring at her grandson in absolute, paralyzed horror.
Before anyone else could speak, the doors to the sitting room burst open.
Six armed federal agents, flanked by Marcus Vance and two SEC directors, marched into the dining room.
"Arthur Sterling, Beatrice Cross, Richard Cross, and Victoria Sterling," the lead federal agent announced, pulling out a stack of arrest warrants. "You are all under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate conspiracy, medical malpractice fraud, and the attempted poisoning of a minor."
Panic erupted in the room.
Victoria shrieked, knocking over her chair as she tried to run toward the terrace doors, but two female agents caught her by the arms and forced her wrists into steel handcuffs.
"Julian! Save me! Please!" Victoria screamed, crying hysterically as she was dragged away. "I loved you! I did it for us!"
Julian didn't even turn his head to look at her.
Richard tried to fight the agents, cursing and swearing, but was quickly slammed onto the table and handcuffed.
Lady Beatrice sat frozen in her chair, her regal dignity entirely shattered, as an agent gently but firmly escorted her from the room, her cane clattering uselessly against the floorboards.
Within ten minutes, the grand dining room was silent once more.
The air was cleared of poison. The shadows that had hung over Cross Manor for five long years were finally dispersed by the harsh, clean light of justice.
Julian walked around the long table. He stood beside Elena and Noah.
Noah looked up at his father, then reached out his tiny left hand and grabbed Julian’s fingers, while his right hand held tight to Elena’s suit jacket.
Julian dropped to his knees, pulling both his son and the extraordinary woman who had saved them both into a fierce, emotional embrace.
"It's over, Noah," Julian wept softly into his son's shoulder. "The bad people are gone. They will never touch you again."
Noah wrapped his small arms around his father's neck, leaning his cheek against Julian’s.
"Daddy," Noah whispered softly into Julian’s ear. "Is Mommy staying?"
May you like
Julian lifted his head, looking up into Elena’s soft brown eyes, which were overflowing with tears of joy.
"Yes, Noah," Julian promised, his heart overflowing with a deep, unbreakable love. "She is staying forever."
