Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Marble Halls

The atmosphere inside Cross Manor shifted overnight. What had once been a quiet, gloomy mausoleum felt suddenly charged with invisible electricity.

Julian spent the next three days working from his home office, keeping his door propped open. He watched. He observed.

He watched as Elena moved through the grand hallways. She never hummed, never wore perfumes, and never dragged heavy furniture across the oak floors. When she washed the windows, she used vinegar and warm water instead of harsh chemical sprays that made Noah cough.

And Noah was watching too.

The seven-year-old boy, who usually spent eighteen hours a day huddled inside his closet clutching his faded stuffed fox, had begun sitting near the bottom of the grand staircase. He held his plastic doctor’s kit in his lap. He didn't speak again, but his dark blue eyes followed Elena’s every movement like a lighthouse tracking a vessel through fog.

On Tuesday afternoon, while Julian was reviewing a merger contract, Richard Cross—Julian’s younger, playboy brother—arrived unannounced. Richard was dressed in an ostentatious velvet jacket, smelling of expensive whiskey and cigar smoke.

"Julian, old boy!" Richard boomed, stepping into the office and pouring himself a drink from Julian’s crystal decanter without asking. "Mother tells me you've gone mad again. Claiming the silent heir spoke to the hired help?"

"He did speak, Richard," Julian said coldly, not looking up from his laptop. "And I'd appreciate it if you lowered your voice. Noah is sensitive to loud sounds."

"Oh, rubbish," Richard sneered, taking a heavy gulp of whiskey. "The kid’s brain is fried, Julian. It’s been two years! You’re dragging down the family reputation by keeping him cooped up here like a ghost. Do you know what the board members are saying? They’re asking if the CEO of Cross Global Logistics can manage a ten-billion-dollar enterprise when he can't even manage a broken child."

Julian slammed his laptop shut. The noise rang out like a gunshot in the room. "Noah is my son. And if any board member questions my leadership, I will buy out their shares and destroy them financially before sunset. Am I clear?"

Richard raised his hands in mock surrender, a greasy smile plastered on his face. "All right, all right! Keep your shirt on. I’m just saying... Victoria is getting impatient. The wedding is in three months. She doesn't want to live in a house with a mute child and a strange maid who gives everyone the creeps."

Richard set his glass down and walked out into the corridor. Julian followed him slowly, intending to show his brother the door.

As they reached the grand foyer, they saw Elena on her hands and knees, polishing the lower brass trim of the antique clock.

Richard stopped. His eyes scanned Elena’s kneeling form, and a strange, cruel smirk curled on his lips. He intentionally kicked her bucket of soapy water as he passed.

The bucket tipped. Gray, soapy water spilled across the polished hardwood, soaking Elena’s knees and hands.

"Oops," Richard drawled carelessly, not even pausing. "Watch where you put your trash, girl."

Elena didn't gasp. She didn't cry out. She simply pulled her hands back from the puddle.

Before Julian could step forward to tear into his brother, a sudden movement on the landing above caught everyone’s attention.

Noah was standing at the top of the stairs.

His tiny hands were clenched into white-knuckled fists against the wooden banister. His face was flushed with a sudden, violent rage that Julian had never seen in him before.

Noah opened his mouth.

"Bad man!" Noah screamed, his small voice echoing off the high ceilings like thunder. "Bad man hurt Mommy!"

The silence that followed was absolute.

Richard froze in mid-stride. Julian’s breath caught in his throat.

Noah hadn't just spoken. He had screamed. And the word he had used burned into the air like white-hot iron.

Mommy.

He had called Elena Marlowe Mommy.
