Chapter 10 - The Safe Heart

One year later.
Spring had arrived at Cross Manor. The gloomy, dark estate had been entirely transformed. The heavy velvet drapes had been replaced with light linen curtains that let the bright golden sunlight flood through every room. The dark oak walls were hung with vibrant paintings, and the gardens outside were blooming with red roses and white lilies.
In the backyard, the sound of joyous, high-pitched laughter echoed across the sweeping lawn.
Noah was running through the green grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy. He was laughing out loud—a rich, musical sound that filled the entire valley. He was attending a prestigious regular school now, excelling in music and mathematics, surrounded by friends who loved his quiet brilliance.
On the grand marble terrace overlooking the lawn, a grand wedding reception was taking place.
Dozens of true friends, respected medical colleagues, and loyal corporate partners were gathered under white marquees, sipping champagne and celebrating.
At the edge of the terrace stood Julian Cross, looking stunning in a tailored navy tuxedo. His arms were wrapped around the waist of his new bride.
Elena looked breathtaking in an elegant, simple lace wedding gown. Her hair fell in soft curls over her shoulders, and her smile was as bright as the spring sun above them.
On her left hand shone a simple, brilliant emerald ring—a symbol of new life, healing, and eternal devotion.
Julian leaned down, resting his chin on her shoulder, watching their son play in the garden below.
"What are you thinking, Dr. Cross?" Julian whispered, kissing the side of her neck.
Elena turned slightly in his arms, resting her hands on his chest, feeling the strong, steady beat of his heart.
"I was thinking," Elena said softly, her eyes shining with absolute happiness, "about the day I lay on your living room carpet with yellow rubber gloves on my hands, pretending not to breathe."
Julian chuckled softly, pulling her closer against his frame. "I thought you were a mysterious, dangerous maid who was breaking my son's silent rule."
"He didn't have a silent rule, Julian," Elena murmured, looking into his eyes with deep tenderness. "He was just waiting for his father to realize that love isn't about finding the perfect cure. It's about building a safe wall around the people you cherish."
At that moment, Noah came running up the marble steps, his cheeks flushed red from playing, holding his plastic doctor’s stethoscope in one hand and his faded stuffed fox in the other.
"Mommy! Daddy!" Noah called out, running straight into the middle of their embrace.
Julian scooped Noah up into his strong arms, while Elena wrapped her arms around both of them, holding her family tight.
Noah leaned forward, placed his plastic stethoscope against his father's chest, then against his mother's chest, listening intently with a sweet, serious smile.
"Diagnosis, Doctor Noah?" Julian asked softly, smiling down at his son.
Noah looked at his father, then at his mother, his blue eyes shining with absolute peace.

"Both hearts are safe," Noah declared proudly. "Forever."
And under the warm golden sunlight of a new beginning, the family that had been built from ashes, trauma, and unyielding love stood together—unbroken, protected, and forever whole.
