Chapter 8 - The Viper's Banquet

Friday evening arrived with a heavy autumn fog that wrapped around Cross Manor like a shroud.

The formal dining room was set with sterling silver, crystal stemware, and white linens. High above, the massive crystal chandelier cast a brilliant, cold light over the attendees.

Seated around the long mahogany table were Lady Beatrice Cross, Richard Cross, Victoria Sterling, and her father, Arthur Sterling—a tall, arrogant man with silver hair and a ruthless reputation in the pharmaceutical industry.

At the head of the table sat Julian Cross, impeccably dressed in a black tuxedo, calmly cutting his steak.

In the adjacent sitting room, behind closed doors, sat two federal prosecutors and three senior investigators from the Securities and Exchange Commission, listening to every word through high-grade wireless microphones concealed in the chandelier.

"Julian, darling," Beatrice said, setting her wine glass down with a delicate click. "Let us finish the paperwork before dessert. The lawyers have prepared the conservatorship transfer for Noah. Once you sign, Arthur’s medical team in Zurich will take full responsibility for the boy’s care."

Arthur Sterling pulled a thick fountain pen from his breast pocket and slid a heavy legal document across the table toward Julian. "It’s for the best, Julian. The boy is a tragic casualty of that terrible accident. You need to focus on your corporate responsibilities and your upcoming marriage to my daughter."

Julian didn't touch the pen. He took a slow sip of his vintage red wine, his eyes scanning the four faces around the table—the family who had tried to steal his son's future.

"Before I sign," Julian said smoothly, "I'd like to bring out our specialist to give a final medical assessment of Noah's condition."

Richard chuckled dryly. "Specialist? What specialist, Julian? You fired all the doctors months ago."

Julian pressed a silver button on the side of the table.

The grand double doors of the dining room swung open.

In walked Elena Marlowe. But she wasn't wearing her navy cleaning apron or yellow rubber gloves.

She was dressed in a sleek, elegant white suit, her dark hair pinned back in a professional chignon. She carried a leather medical briefcase under her arm.

Beside her, holding her hand tightly, walked Noah.

The seven-year-old boy was wearing a tiny black suit. His hair was neatly combed, his eyes were clear, bright, and focused, and his small face was free of the terrified fog that had plagued him for two long years.

Beatrice dropped her fork onto her porcelain plate with a loud clatter.

Arthur Sterling gasped, half-rising from his chair. "What is the meaning of this?!"

Victoria looked like she was about to throw up, clutching her throat in sheer horror. "Father... that's her! That's the maid!"

"Not a maid, Miss Sterling," Elena said, her voice ringing out through the dining room with absolute, unshakeable authority. "Dr. Elena Vance-Ross. Licensed Pediatric Neuro-Trauma Specialist."

"This is an outrage!" Richard shouted, jumping up from his chair. "Julian, have you lost your mind?! You brought this disgraced fraud into our home?!"

"Sit down, Richard," Julian commanded, his voice so terrifyingly cold that Richard instinctively collapsed back into his seat.

Elena walked to the head of the table, placing her medical briefcase on the mahogany surface. She looked directly at Arthur Sterling and Lady Beatrice.

"Five years ago," Elena began clearly, "Noah Cross suffered severe traumatic brain injury following a vehicular collision. He did not lose his speech because of neurological destruction. He lost his speech due to severe psychological trauma... and because someone was systematically poisoning his food with low-grade speech-inhibiting sedatives provided by Sterling Pharmaceuticals."

A collective gasp echoed around the room.

"That's a lie!" Arthur Sterling roared, slamming his fists on the table. "You have no proof of such absurd slander! You're a disgraced doctor whose license was revoked for medical malpractice!"

"Her license was reinstated two hours ago by the Massachusetts State Medical Board, Arthur," Julian interrupted, pulling an official state document from his jacket and tossing it onto the table. "Along with a full pardon and an apology from the Governor’s office."
