Chapter 6 - The Midnight Encounter

Julian walked down the dimly lit service corridor of the west wing, where the staff quarters were located.

He stopped in front of Room 104.

A thin strip of warm light leaked from beneath the door. From inside came the faint, delicate sound of a pen scratching against paper.

Julian didn't knock. He gently turned the brass handle and pushed the door open.

Elena was sitting at a small wooden desk in her pajamas, wrapped in an old woolen cardigan. On the desk lay a thick leather journal filled with detailed medical notes, hand-drawn behavioral charts of Noah, and meticulous observations of his speech triggers over the past nineteen days.

She jumped up in surprise, quickly slamming the journal shut and pulling it against her chest like a shield.

"Mr. Cross!" she gasped, her eyes wide with shock. "What... what are you doing here? It’s past one in the morning."

Julian closed the door softly behind him. He stepped into the small, humble room. He didn't look at her with the cold eyes of an employer. His eyes were burning with intense, profound guilt.

He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out the Massachusetts court document, and laid it gently on her desk.

Elena’s eyes fell upon the official seal of the Massachusetts Court. She froze. The color slowly drained from her face, leaving her looking utterly defenseless.

"Dr. Marlowe," Julian said softly, his voice thick with emotion.

Elena let out a long, ragged breath. The defensive wall she had maintained for three weeks finally collapsed. She dropped into her chair, covering her face with her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent, painful sobs.

"You know," she wept softly into her hands. "You know everything."

Julian dropped to his knees before her small wooden chair—just as he had on the carpet days ago. But this time, he took her cold, trembling hands in his own, holding them with reverent gentleness.

"I know that you saved my son's life five years ago," Julian choked out, tears shining in his own eyes. "I know that my family ruined your life. I know that they took your license, your reputation, your home... and I know that despite all of that evil, you came back here in yellow rubber gloves to clean my floors just so you could check on my boy."

Elena looked down at him through her tears. "He was so small, Julian," she whispered, using his first name for the very first time. "The night of the accident... when your wife died... Noah’s heart stopped twice on my operating table. I fought for seven hours to bring him back. When he woke up, he couldn't speak, but he squeezed my finger. I promised him that night in the ICU that I would never let anyone hurt him."

"And then my mother framed you," Julian said bitterly, his jaw tight with rage.

"They needed someone to blame for his regression so they could control his trust," Elena explained, wiping her eyes. "Victoria’s father offered me five million dollars to sign a confession stating that Noah’s brain damage was permanent and incurable. I refused. So they destroyed me. They made sure no hospital in the world would ever hire me again."

"Why didn't you come to me?" Julian begged, his chest aching. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you were surrounded by them!" Elena cried softly. "Your mother, your brother, your fiancée... they controlled your security, your house, your life! If I had come to you as Dr. Marlowe, they would have had me arrested for violating the restraining order they put on me. The only way I could get near Noah... was to apply as a maid through a third-party agency under my maiden name."

Julian pressed her cold hands against his cheek. "You called his heart safe," he whispered. "And he called you 'Mommy'."

"Because I love him, Julian," Elena confessed, her voice cracking with pure, unadulterated devotion. "I don't have a child of my own. For five years, Noah has been the child of my heart. I couldn't leave him in this house with those vultures."

May you like

Julian stood up. He looked at the medical journal on her desk, then looked into her dark, beautiful eyes.

"You aren't a maid in this house anymore, Elena," Julian swore, his voice turning into solid iron. "You are Noah’s doctor. You are his guardian. And from this second onward... you are under my protection. We are going to tear them down. All of them."
