Chapter 8 - The War for the Fleet

The fall of Julian Falcone created a massive power vacuum in the city’s shipping industry.

While Falcone sat in a federal detention cell awaiting trial for murder, kidnapping, and corporate fraud, his corrupt board members tried to liquidate the Vance Maritime assets before Nora could legally claim them.

On Monday morning, the glass skyscraper of the Vance Maritime Headquarters on Wall Street was host to an emergency board meeting.

Twelve corrupt executives sat around the mahogany conference table, frantically signing papers to transfer the shipping fleet to an offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands.

"Sign it fast," the interim chairman growled. "Before the Rossi family gets the court injunctions through—"

BOOM!

The heavy double doors of the boardroom were kicked wide open.

Viktor and six Rossi tactical officers stepped into the room, securing the exits.

Then, Nora Callahan walked in.

She wore a tailored navy-blue business suit, her dark hair styled cleanly, her posture commanding and absolute. Beside her walked Mateo Rossi, wearing a charcoal suit, his presence imposing and terrifying.

Behind them walked Lady Beatrice Vance and three senior federal prosecutors.

"Put down your pens, gentlemen," Nora said, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the room.

The interim chairman stood up, sweating profusely. "Who the hell are you?! You can't enter a private board meeting!"

Prosecutor Miller stepped forward, placing a thick stack of federal court orders on the glass table.

"As of eight o'clock this morning," Prosecutor Miller announced, "the Federal District Court has recognized Miss Nora Callahan as the sole legitimate heir of Victoria Vance. All corporate signatures executed over the last twenty-seven years under Julian Falcone’s illegal tenure are hereby voided."

The executives dropped their pens, their faces draining of all color.

Nora stepped up to the head of the long table—the seat that had belonged to her mother twenty-seven years ago. She placed her hands flat on the mahogany wood, looking down at the corrupt men who had profited off her mother’s murder.

"You have ten minutes to clear your personal belongings from this building," Nora commanded, her hazel eyes flashing with fierce, unbreakable power. "If you are still on the premises at 8:15 AM, Mr. Rossi’s legal team will have you arrested for corporate trespassing and obstruction of justice."

The executives didn't argue. They scrambled out of their chairs, grabbing their coats and briefcases, running out of the boardroom like rats fleeing a sinking ship.

When the room cleared, Nora turned around to face the high window overlooking the harbor where dozens of massive cargo ships bore the Vance flag.

Mateo walked up behind her, wrapping his warm arms around her waist, resting his chin gently on her shoulder.

"You were magnificent, my queen," Mateo whispered softly.

Nora leaned back against his broad chest, a soft, happy smile lighting up her face. "My mother built this company to help people, Mateo. We are going to use it to fund clinics, orphanages, and free nursing schools across the entire state."

"Whatever you want, Nora," Mateo murmured, kissing her neck. "This city is yours."
