Chapter 10 - The Light that Saved Us (Happily Ever After)

One Year Later.

The Cathedral of St. Patrick in Midtown Manhattan was decorated with thousands of white lilies, yellow roses, and twinkling candles.

It was hailed as the wedding of the century.

Over five hundred guests filled the pews—state governors, international shipping barons, union leaders, and hundreds of nurses, doctors, and former orphans whose lives had been transformed by the Vance-Rossi Foundations.

Organ music echoed majestically through the high stone arches.

At the front of the altar stood Mateo Rossi, looking impossibly handsome in a black tuxedo, his eyes fixed on the rear doors with an intense, loving expectation. Beside him stood Viktor as his best man, wearing a proud smile.

The heavy oak doors opened.

Nora Callahan walked down the aisle on the arm of Lady Beatrice Vance.

Nora was a vision of breathtaking beauty. Her white lace bridal gown featured a long, flowing train embroidered with delicate silver threads forming crescent moons and roses. A diamond tiara rested on her dark, elegant hair, holding a sheer veil that caught the warm light of the candles.

In the front row, Elena Rossi sat wiping tears of joy from her eyes, holding a small lace handkerchief.

When Nora reached the altar, Mateo stepped forward, taking her hands in his. His hands were strong, warm, and steady.

"You take my breath away, mia cara," Mateo whispered softly.

"You gave me my breath back, Mateo," Nora replied, her hazel eyes shining with infinite love.

The Cardinal conducted the ceremony, reciting ancient vows of loyalty, protection, and eternal love.

"By the power vested in me," the Cardinal announced, "I now pronounce you Husband and Wife. Son, you may kiss your bride."

Mateo lifted Nora’s veil, framing her face with his large hands, and pulled her into a deep, passionate, eternal kiss.

The entire cathedral erupted into thunderous, joyous applause.

Hand in hand, Mateo and Nora walked down the aisle, stepping out through the grand cathedral doors into the warm, golden sunshine of New York City.

A fleet of polished Maybachs waited along the curb, surrounded by cheering crowds, news reporters, and tossing flower petals.

As they stepped into the lead Maybach, Nora leaned her head against Mateo’s shoulder, looking out at the city where she had once walked alone in a single worn coat, invisible and exhausted.

Mateo wrapped his arm tightly around her, pressing a kiss to her forehead.

"Where to, Mrs. Rossi?" Mateo smiled softly.

Nora looked into his steel-blue eyes, then down at the glittering diamond on her finger, and finally out at the bright, beautiful world waiting for them.

"Home, Mateo," Nora smiled, her heart completely full, peaceful, and forever safe. "Take me home."
