Chapter 6 - The Shattered Past

The ballroom hummed with sudden, chaotic whispering as Lady Beatrice Vance stared at Nora as if she were a resurrected ghost.
"I... I don't know my birth mother," Nora said, startled by the old woman's frantic reaction. "I was left at St. Jude’s Orphanage when I was a baby."
"St. Jude’s... twenty-seven years ago?!" Beatrice gasped, clutching her diamond brooch. "The birthmark on your left wrist... do you have a crescent moon birthmark?!"
Nora froze. Slowly, she lifted the sleeve of her silk emerald gown, revealing a delicate, dark crescent-shaped mark near her pulse point.
The entire ballroom gasped.
"It's her..." Beatrice whispered, tears filling her aged eyes. "You are Victoria Vance’s daughter! The heiress to the Vance Maritime Empire who vanished twenty-seven years ago!"
Mateo’s eyes narrowed into sharp slits. He wrapped his arm around Nora’s waist, pulling her protectively against his side. "Beatrice, explain yourself. Now."
Beatrice took a deep breath, her hands shaking. "Twenty-seven years ago, Victoria Vance—my niece—was the sole heiress to the Vance shipping fortune. She fell in love with a man her family disapproved of. When she gave birth to a baby girl in secret at St. Jude’s hospital, she was murdered in her hospital room by someone who wanted her inheritance!"
Beatrice turned her head, her furious, tear-filled eyes locking directly onto Julian Falcone.
"The baby vanished!" Beatrice cried out, pointing a trembling finger at Falcone. "Julian Falcone was Victoria’s stepbrother! He took over the Vance Maritime fleet after her death because no direct heir was ever found!"
The realization hit the room like a megaton bomb.
Nora stood frozen, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She wasn't just a discarded orphan. She was the rightful heiress to one of the largest shipping fortunes in North America—a fortune that Julian Falcone had stolen twenty-seven years ago after murdering her mother.
Falcone’s face went completely purple with rage and panic. "This is absurdity! This girl is a fraud! She’s an imposter brought by Rossi to steal my company!"
Falcone pulled a silver pistol from his velvet jacket, aiming it directly at Nora’s chest. "I’ll kill you both!"
BANG!
Before Falcone could pull the trigger, Mateo moved with lightning speed. He pulled his own custom firearm from his holster, firing a single, precise shot.
The bullet struck Falcone’s right hand, shattering his pistol and sending him screaming to the floor, clutching his bleeding fingers.
Viktor and ten Rossi tactical guards flooded the ballroom instantly, disarming Falcone’s bodyguards and pinning them to the floor.
Mateo stood over the bleeding Falcone, his boot pressing firmly against Falcone’s chest.
"You kidnapped my mother," Mateo said, his voice echoing through the silent ballroom like divine judgment. "And you stole the life and legacy of the woman I love. Your empire ends tonight, Julian."
Mateo signaled to Viktor. "Take him to the basement. Hand him over to the Federal Prosecutors alongside the DNA evidence from St. Jude’s."
Mateo turned back to Nora.

She was pale, shaking, overwhelmed by the sudden deluge of truth, legacy, and violence.
Mateo didn't care about the cameras, the rival bosses, or the high-society elites staring at them. He stepped forward, lifted Nora into his arms like she weighed nothing, and carried her out of the Plaza Hotel into the cool night air.
