Chapter 7 - The Unbreakable Truth

Back at the Hudson estate, the night was long and restless.
Private investigators, federal attorneys, and medical archivists worked through the night, cross-referencing blood samples, old hospital records from St. Jude’s, and DNA profiles.
By 4:00 AM, the final report was laid on the mahogany desk in Mateo’s study.
It was ninety-nine point nine percent conclusive.
Nora Callahan was Victoria Vance’s daughter—the absolute, sole legal owner of the Vance Maritime Corporation, holding seventy percent of the shipping docks along the Eastern Seaboard.
Nora sat on the leather sofa near the fireplace, wrapped in a warm wool blanket, staring into the flames.
Mateo walked over, carrying two cups of warm chamomile tea. He sat down beside her, setting the cups on the table.
"Are you okay, Nora?" Mateo asked gently.
"I spent my whole life thinking nobody wanted me," Nora whispered, tears rolling down her cheeks. "I thought my mother threw me away in a cardboard box because I was a burden. But... she died trying to protect me, didn't she?"
"She loved you, Nora," Mateo said softly, reaching out and wiping a tear from her cheek with his thumb. "And she left you an empire. You are no longer the girl scrubbing floors, Nora. You own half this city's ports."
Nora looked up into Mateo’s steel-blue eyes. "I don't care about the shipping ports, Mateo. I don't care about the money."
"Then what do you care about?" Mateo asked, his voice dropping into a raw, vulnerable whisper he had never shown another soul.
Nora reached out, her small hand covering his large, tattooed hand. "I care about the man who stood between me and a gun. I care about the man who brought his mother home. I care about you, Mateo."
Mateo stared at her, his heart pounding in his chest. For fifteen years, he had lived in a world of blood, betrayal, and dark duty. He had believed he was incapable of loving or being loved.

He reached out, cupping her cheek, and pulled her gently toward him.
When his lips met hers, it wasn't a fierce, terrifying kiss of a mafia boss; it was a deep, tender, lingering promise of a man giving his heart away forever.
