Chapter 4 - The Gala of the Serpents

Three weeks passed. Under Nora’s dedicated care and the estate’s peaceful surroundings, Elena Rossi made a full recovery, though she remained frail and walked with the assistance of a cane.
A deep, unspoken bond had formed between Nora and Elena. They spent afternoons in the estate’s glass conservatory, drinking tea, while Elena shared stories of Mateo’s childhood.
And slowly, reluctantly, Nora found her eyes wandering to the window every evening at six o'clock, waiting for the sound of Mateo’s convoy pulling up the long driveway.
Mateo was a storm of a man, but around Nora, his dark edges seemed to smooth out. He listened when she spoke about her days as a nurse. He brought her rare botany books when he learned she loved flowers. He never pushed her, never demanded anything, but his protective presence surrounded her like a warm velvet cloak.
However, peace in the syndicate world was always an illusion.
On a cold Thursday evening, Mateo stood in the estate’s library, staring at an invitation printed on heavy cream cardstock with a gold snake crest.
"The annual Syndicate Truce Gala," Mateo said coldly as Viktor poured him a glass of scotch. "Julian Falcone called the meeting at the Plaza Hotel."
"It's a trap, Boss," Viktor warned. "Falcone lost three shipping docks last week. He’s desperate. He knows your mother is back, and he knows about the nurse."
Nora, who was walking past the library door carrying a tray of tea for Elena, stopped in the shadows, listening.
Mateo took a sip of his drink, his eyes gleaming with lethal ambition. "If I go alone, Falcone will think I am hiding something. If I bring Nora as my official guest, under the full protection of the Rossi crest, he will know she is untouchable."
Nora stepped into the doorway, her heart hammering against her ribs. "You want me to go to a mafia gala?"
Mateo turned around slowly. His eyes swept over her simple sweater and jeans.
"I will not force you, Nora," Mateo said, his voice dropping into a gentle cadence. "If you stay here, twenty armed men will guard these gates. But if you walk by my side tonight... the entire city will know that anyone who dares look at you with malice answers directly to me."
Nora looked at the golden invitation on the desk. She thought about her life three weeks ago—invisible, beaten down, discarded by a hospital that used her as a scapegoat.
She raised her head, her hazel eyes sparkling with a fierce, newfound courage.
"I need a dress," Nora said simply.
Two hours later, a team of high-fashion stylists arrived at the estate.
When Nora descended the grand staircase at 8:00 PM, even Viktor, the hardened soldier, held his breath.
Nora wore a floor-length, emerald-green silk gown that clung gracefully to her slender frame, exposing her delicate collarbones and shoulders. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant updo, leaving soft tendrils framing her neck. Around her throat sat a vintage diamond necklace that had belonged to the Rossi family for three generations.
Mateo stood at the bottom of the stairs wearing a midnight-black tuxedo.
As Nora reached the final step, Mateo stepped forward. He didn't speak. He simply lifted her hand, pressing his lips gently against her knuckles.
"You look breathtaking, Nora," Mateo whispered, his blue eyes burning with an open, fierce admiration that made Nora’s cheeks flush warm crimson.

"Don't get used to it, Mr. Rossi," Nora tried to joke, though her voice trembled slightly. "I'm still just a nurse."
"No," Mateo said, guiding her hand onto his arm. "Tonight, you are the most dangerous woman in New York."
