Chapter 5 - The Snake's Nest

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering crystal chandeliers, expensive champagne, and the most dangerous criminals, corrupt politicians, and high-society elites in the tri-state area.
When the heavy oak doors opened and Mateo Rossi entered with Nora Callahan on his arm, the hum of conversation died down instantly.
Musicians paused their violins. Rival bosses lowered their glasses.
Mateo walked with the regal, effortless grace of a king inspecting his domain. Beside him, Nora held her head high, her posture immaculate, refusing to show a single shred of fear despite the dozens of cold, predatory eyes staring at her.
"Keep your chin up, mia cara," Mateo murmured softly beside her ear, his hand resting possessively at the small of her back. "They are staring because they have never seen pure gold among copper."
From across the ballroom, a tall, thin man in his late fifties with slicked-back gray hair and a sharp, rodent-like face stepped out from a circle of guards.
It was Julian Falcone.
Falcone held a glass of red wine, a sneering, fake smile plastered across his face as he approached them.
"Mateo!" Falcone called out, his voice grating and thin. "How wonderful of you to join us! And... who is this lovely flower you've brought to our humble gathering?"
Mateo stopped three feet from Falcone. The air between the two men turned instantly toxic.
"Julian," Mateo said, his tone as flat as a marble tombstone. "This is Nora Callahan. The woman who saved my mother's life after your men left her in the rain."
The room went dead silent. Several rival bosses exchanged nervous glances. Mateo was calling out the kidnapping publicly in front of the entire underworld council.
Falcone’s smile twitched, his dark eyes snapping toward Nora with deep, venomous hatred.
"Ah, the little street nurse," Falcone sneered, taking a slow step toward Nora. "How noble. You know, Miss Callahan... in our world, people who meddle in things they don't understand tend to catch severe illnesses. Very suddenly."
Before Falcone could take another step, Mateo stepped directly in front of Nora, blocking her completely from Falcone's view.
Mateo leaned in close to Falcone’s face, his voice dropping into a whisper that carried absolute, terrifying death.
"If you speak to her again," Mateo whispered, "I will burn every dock, every warehouse, and every house bearing the Falcone name to ashes before the sun rises tomorrow. Try me, Julian."
Falcone swallowed hard, taking an involuntary step backward, his face paling under Mateo's suffocating aura.
Nora, standing behind Mateo, felt a strange, thrilling surge in her chest. For years, she had been pushed around by hospital board members, landlord bullies, and corrupt supervisors who treated her like trash.
Now, the most feared man in the city was ready to wage war just to protect her dignity.
Suddenly, an elderly woman in an opulent silver gown—Lady Beatrice Vance, the oldest matriarch of the high-society council—stepped forward, holding a pair of golden opera glasses.
Beatrice stared intently at Nora’s face, her eyes widening in absolute shock.

"My God..." Lady Beatrice gasped, her glass tumbling from her hands and shattering against the marble floor. "Those eyes... that jawline..."
Beatrice rushed forward, her hands trembling as she looked directly at Nora. "Child! Who was your mother?!"
