Chapter 8 - A New Foundation

One year later. Summer 2026.
The morning sun shone brightly over the downtown Columbus Arts District, illuminating the sleek glass façade of a newly constructed three-story building.
Above the entrance, gold lettering sparkled in the light:
THE LILY MERCER TRAUMA RECOVERY CENTER
Using a portion of the court-ordered restitution funds liquidated from Grant's former assets, combined with a generous matching grant from Eleanor Vance’s legal foundation, we had built a non-profit specialized therapy center for pediatric hit-and-run victims and families recovering from domestic trauma.
Dozens of supporters, doctors, news reporters, and local community leaders gathered on the plaza outside.
I stood at the podium, wearing an elegant cream-colored suit, my dark hair falling over my shoulders. Standing beside me was Lily—now thirteen years old, tall, healthy, radiant, and wearing a bright blue summer dress.
Beside her stood Eleanor, and beside Eleanor stood Detective Lena Ortiz, who had recently retired from the police force to serve as the chief security director for our new foundation.
I stepped up to the microphone, looking out over the crowd.
"Eighteen months ago," I spoke into the microphone, my voice steady, resonant, and carrying clearly over the warm air, "a dark storm entered my daughter's life. She was hit by a car, abandoned by a person who was supposed to protect her, and left to fight for her life in an ICU."
The audience listened in quiet respect.
"In that dark room," I continued, looking down at Lily, who smiled up at me with total love and trust, "a question was asked. My daughter asked if she was an unwanted child. And on that night, I made a vow. I vowed that no child, no mother, and no victim of selfish cruelty would ever feel alone, discarded, or unprotected in this city."
I gestured toward the grand glass doors behind us.
"This center was built to honor that promise," I declared. "It stands as a reminder that light will always conquer darkness, that truth will always crush lies, and that love is a choice we make every single day."
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause.
Lily stepped forward with a large pair of gold ribbon-cutting scissors. Together, she and I held the thick red ribbon stretching across the entrance.
"Ready, Mom?" Lily asked, looking at me with bright, shining eyes.
May you like
"Ready, my love," I replied.
With a swift, clean snip, the ribbon fell, and the crowd cheered as the doors opened to welcome the community inside.
