Chapter 2 - The Alibi Collapses

By noon the following day, Lily had been moved out of the ICU into a private room on the pediatric surgical floor.

Her color was returning, though the pain remained severe. The doctors were cautiously optimistic about her internal injuries, but the emotional scars were bleeding open.

"Mom," Lily whispered, her weak voice raspy. "Is Dad coming back?"

I sat beside her, gently wiping her brow with a damp cloth. I refused to lie to her anymore. The age of protecting her from the truth at the cost of her safety was over.

"Your father made his choice, Lily," I said gently, holding her hand. "He is dealing with the police right now. But you don't need to worry about him. You have me. You will always have me."

She squeezed my fingers, tears welling in her eyes. "Why did he look at me like that yesterday? Like... like he didn't know me?"

My heart tore in two, but before I could answer, the door swung open.

Grant walked in.

He wasn't wearing his tailored suit from yesterday. His hair was disheveled, his shirt unbuttoned at the collar, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes. He carried a large bouquet of pink lilies and a teddy bear—a pathetic, insulting attempt at damage control.

"Claire," he said, his voice raspy. "Lily. Thank God."

I stood up immediately, putting my body between Grant and my daughter's bed.

"Get out," I said quietly.

"Claire, stop," Grant pleaded, stepping forward. "I know you're angry about yesterday. I made a mistake leaving the hospital, okay? Vanessa was in a state of shock. She was having a panic attack—"

"A panic attack?" I interrupted, my voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "She drove a three-ton SUV over our twelve-year-old child in a school zone, Grant! Then she dragged you to a luxury boutique to buy her a dress so she wouldn't have blood on her clothes!"

Grant froze, his face draining of color. "That... that's not what happened. She bought a dress because—"

"Because her original coat had glass particles and paint fragments embedded in the sleeves!" Detective Ortiz's voice rang out from the doorway.

Detective Ortiz stepped into the room, flanked by two uniformed officers and Eleanor Vance.

Grant turned around, his hands trembling as he clutched the flowers. "Detective... I told you, Vanessa’s car was stolen from the garage at 10:30—"

"Mr. Mercer, stop talking," Detective Ortiz said, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt. "Twenty minutes ago, traffic enforcement cameras at the intersection of 5th and Main were processed. We have high-definition, clear video footage of Vanessa Hale behind the wheel of Vehicle 302 at 11:34 a.m., striking your daughter."

Grant swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically between Ortiz and Eleanor. "She... she told me she wasn't driving..."

"And we also have audio from Hale Communications' security desk," Ortiz continued, stepping closer. "At 11:52 a.m., you placed a call to Vanessa Hale's cell phone. The call was recorded on their corporate line. Do you know what you said on that call, Grant?"

Grant lowered the flowers. His knees seemed to weaken.

"You said," Ortiz read from a notepad, "'I wiped the fleet access logs for 302. Park it in the rear bay and stay at the hotel until I pick you up. I'll handle the police if they call Northstar.'"

"No..." Grant gasped, taking a step back. "I didn't know... I didn't know it was Lily! I thought Vanessa hit a pedestrian or another car! I didn't know it was Lily!"

"You sacrificed a child for your mistress regardless of who that child was!" I roared, stepping into his space, my finger pointed directly at his chest. "You thought it was someone else's daughter? That makes you a monster! The fact that it was your daughter makes you a devil!"

Lily let out a quiet sob from the bed.

Grant looked past me at Lily, his face twisted in a pathetic mask of regret. "Lily... baby, please... Daddy didn't know..."

"Don't call her that," I hissed. "You ran a fake DNA test four months ago so you could stop feeling guilty about cheating on us. You discarded her the second you found an excuse."

"It wasn't fake!" Grant shouted, slipping back into his defensive rage. "The report came from a certified lab! She isn't mine, Claire! You cheated on me twelve years ago!"

Eleanor Vance stepped forward, pulling an official document with a gold raised seal from her portfolio.

"Mr. Mercer," Eleanor said smoothly. "The lab report you received four months ago was generated by a fraudulent online portal hosted on a server paid for by Hale Communications. Yesterday evening, under court order, the Ohio State Police Forensic Division ran a certified, emergency paternity test using the blood samples drawn during Lily's surgery."

Eleanor handed the certified document to Grant.

"Lily Mercer is your biological daughter with a 99.998% statistical certainty," Eleanor stated, her voice slicing through the room like a broadsword. "You abandoned your own flesh and blood to bleed in an ICU while you paid for the steak dinner of the woman who ran her down."

Grant stared at the document. The paper shook wildly in his grasp. His eyes scanned the raised seal, the certified state laboratory header, and the undeniable numbers printed at the bottom.

He collapsed back against the wall, the bouquet of flowers slipping from his hand and scattering across the floor.

"No..." he whimpered, sliding down the wall until he was sitting on the tile floor, clutching his head. "No... no, no... God, no..."

"Grant Mercer," Detective Ortiz said, stepping forward and pulling his hands behind his back. "You are under arrest for obstruction of justice, tampering with evidence, and felony accessory to a hit-and-run involving great bodily harm. You have the right to remain silent..."

As the officers pulled him to his feet and snapped the cuffs around his wrists, Grant looked back at Lily, tears streaming down his face.

"Lily!" he cried out, his voice breaking into hysterical sobs. "Lily, please look at me! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!"

Lily didn't look at him.

She reached out, grabbed my hand, and pulled it against her cheek, turning her back on him completely as he was dragged out of the room in chains.
