Chapter 10 - The Choice

Summer sun bathed the backyard of our new home in Upper Arlington, Ohio.
It was a beautiful four-bedroom house with a large garden, a stone patio, and a sparkling pool where Lily spent her summer afternoons swimming with her middle school friends.
It was Lily’s fourteenth birthday.
The backyard was decorated with fairy lights, yellow lanterns, and a large banner that read: HAPPY 14TH BIRTHDAY, LILY!
Laughter filled the air as twenty of Lily's friends splashed in the pool.
On the patio, Eleanor Vance was grilling burgers alongside Detective Ortiz, while my sister Sarah was setting up a three-tiered chocolate cake on the picnic table.
I stood near the french doors, holding a glass of iced tea, watching my daughter laugh as her friends splashed her with water.
She was healthy. She was vibrant. She was safe.
She was surrounded by a community of people who truly loved her—people who had stood by her when she was bleeding in an ICU, people who had fought for her justice, and people who chose her every single day.
Lily hopped out of the pool, wrapped a fluffy yellow towel around her shoulders, and ran up the stone steps toward me, her damp hair shining in the golden afternoon light.
"Mom!" she laughed, grabbing a strawberry from the fruit platter. "Did you see my dive? Eleanor said it was a ten out of ten!"
"I saw it," I smiled, wrapping my arm around her shoulders, pulling her damp, warm body against my side. "You looked like an Olympic swimmer."
Lily leaned her head against my shoulder, looking out over the party, over the happy faces of our friends, over the peaceful, beautiful life we had built together from the ashes of a nightmare.
"Mom?" she whispered softly.
"Yes, baby?"
"Remember that night in the hospital?" Lily asked gently. "When I asked if I was an unwanted kid?"
I squeezed her shoulder, my heart overflowing with endless warmth. "I remember."
Lily looked up into my eyes, her face illuminated by a bright, radiant, completely unbroken smile.
"I know the answer now, Mom," Lily said, her voice clear, confident, and filled with complete peace. "I’m the most wanted kid in the whole world."
Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness welled in my eyes. I leaned down and kissed her forehead.
"You always were, Lily," I whispered. "And you always will be."

As the sun began to set, casting golden light over the garden, the music played softly, laughter echoed through the trees, and we sat together on the porch—unbroken, triumphant, and finally, completely free.
