Chapter 5 - Vanessa’s Gambit

While Grant crumbled under the weight of his own foolishness, Vanessa Hale was a entirely different beast.
She was cold, calculating, and possessed a vast network of dirty connections. Unlike Grant, who had broken down instantly, Vanessa had managed to post a high-risk corporate bond using assets she had hidden under her mother's maiden name before the freeze went into effect.
Three weeks after her arrest, Vanessa was released on home confinement pending trial, fitted with an ankle monitor, and restricted to her penthouse suite downtown.
I learned about her release during a meeting with Eleanor.
"She’s desperate, Claire," Eleanor warned me, showing me a list of recent court motions filed by Vanessa's high-priced defense team. "Her lawyers are trying to push all criminal liability onto Grant. They are claiming Grant was the one driving Vehicle 302, and that Vanessa was merely a passenger who was intimidated into silence by him."
"Will that work?" I asked, feeling a knot of worry tighten in my stomach.
"Not with the traffic camera footage we have," Eleanor said. "But Vanessa is trying to orchestrate an out-of-court settlement with us. Her lawyers reached out this morning. She wants to offer a $2 million private settlement from her mother's estate in exchange for you signing an affidavit stating you believe Grant was the primary orchestrator of the hit-and-run."
I stared at Eleanor in disbelief. "She wants me to lie to protect her?"
"She wants to give you money to buy your silence," Eleanor said. "If you sign the affidavit, her criminal charges drop from vehicular assault to failure to report an accident—which carries probation instead of prison time."
I stood up from the desk, my hands clenched into fists. "Where is she right now?"
"Claire, don't—"
"Where is she, Eleanor?"
An hour later, I pulled up outside the luxury high-rise penthouse complex where Vanessa was confined.
I didn't go alone. I brought Detective Ortiz with me, who was eager to document any attempt by Vanessa to tamper with a key witness in an ongoing criminal prosecution.
We rode the elevator up to the top floor.
I knocked on the heavy mahogany door of Penthouse 4B.
The door swung open. Vanessa stood there wearing a silk robe, a glass of white wine in her hand, and a black electronic monitor strapped around her left ankle. Without her high-end makeup and designer outfits, she looked sharp, frantic, and venomous.
She saw me, and a slow, cruel smirk crossed her face.
"Claire," Vanessa purred, leaning against the doorframe. "I see my lawyers reached out to you. Have you considered my offer? Two million dollars is a lot of money for a single mother with an injured kid."
I stepped right up to the threshold, looking down at her with cold contempt.
"You ran over a child," I said clearly.
"I hit a kid who ran into the street," Vanessa corrected smoothly, taking a sip of her wine. "It was an accident. Grant was the one who told me to drive away. Grant was the one who erased the access logs. If anyone belongs in a cell, it’s your pathetic, weak husband who couldn't wait to hand over his company's money just to touch my waist."
"Grant is going to prison," I said. "And so are you."
Vanessa laughed—a high, mocking sound. "Do you really think a jury in this city is going to convict a wealthy, well-connected businesswoman based on the testimony of a disgraced executive and a bitter ex-wife? I’ll be off this ankle monitor in three months, Claire. And you’ll still be struggling to pay your daughter's physical therapy bills."
I smiled softly.
It was the first real, triumphant smile I had worn in months.
I stepped aside, revealing Detective Ortiz standing right behind me, holding a black digital recorder in her hand.
"Ms. Hale," Detective Ortiz said, stepping into the penthouse doorway. "Did you just admit that you hit a child in the street and that you knew about the erasure of Northstar fleet logs?"
Vanessa’s face went dead white. The wine glass slipped from her fingers, shattering on the marble entryway floor.
"What... what is this?" Vanessa stammered, stepping back. "This is private property! You can't record me!"
"Under Ohio law, one-party consent applies to witness communication regarding active felony investigations," Ortiz said, pulling out a fresh arrest warrant. "Furthermore, attempting to bribe a witness with $2 million to alter testimony is a third-degree felony."
Two state troopers stepped around the corner of the hallway, their boots heavy against the carpet.
"Vanessa Hale," Ortiz announced, snapping the cuffs over Vanessa's manicured wrists. "Your bond has been revoked. You are under arrest for witness tampering, bribery, and violation of home confinement conditions."

As the troopers dragged Vanessa down the hallway, kicking her silk robe out of her way as she screamed profanities at the top of her lungs, I looked down at the shattered glass on the floor.
The illusion was completely gone. The predators who had tried to destroy my family were tearing each other apart in the dark.
