Chapter 1 - The Paper Trail

The soft, rhythmic beep of the pediatric ICU monitors provided a stark background to the storm brewing outside the glass walls.

Lily slept fitfully, her small face pale against the stark white hospital linens. I sat beside her, gently stroking her hair, my mind racing faster than the pulse monitor above her head.

Grant had been removed from the floor by hospital security, but I knew he wouldn't stay dormant for long. A man driven by self-preservation, financial arrogance, and a toxic devotion to a mistress who had just committed a hit-and-run against his own child was a dangerous, desperate creature.

My phone vibrated on the tray table. It was an encrypted file transfer from an unknown number, followed by a text message.

[Detective Ortiz]: Check the attached documents. They were pulled from Northstar Logistics' internal server forty minutes ago before someone tried to wipe the access logs.

I opened the file. It was a digital manifest for Northstar Logistics' executive fleet.

Vehicle 302—the silver SUV that had crushed my daughter's ribs in the crosswalk—wasn't just any vendor vehicle. It was assigned directly to Grant’s executive account for "special corporate development."

And the automated telemetry data told a story that made my stomach turn into a block of solid ice.

At 11:32 a.m. yesterday, Vehicle 302's onboard GPS tracked its location to High Street, right outside Lily's middle school. The vehicle stopped for forty seconds. Then, the throttle was depressed to eighty percent in a speed zone marked fifteen miles per hour.

Impact sensors registered a heavy frontal collision at 11:34 a.m.

Instead of stopping, the SUV accelerated, turning sharply down a side alley toward the industrial district.

At 11:50 a.m., the vehicle's engine was cut inside a private detailing bay owned by Hale Communications—Vanessa’s company.

At 12:15 p.m.—while I was screaming into my phone in the emergency room waiting area—Grant’s corporate login was used to alter the vehicle’s status from "Active/In-Service" to "Off-Site Maintenance / Private Garage."

He didn't just help her after the fact. He had covered for her while the blood was still fresh on the pavement.

A quiet knock at the door startled me.

I turned to see a tall, middle-aged woman wearing a sharp navy suit and carrying a leather briefcase. Her hair was pulled into a precise bun, and her steel-gray eyes radiated absolute, unshakable competence.

"Mrs. Mercer?" she asked softly, stepping into the room. "My name is Eleanor Vance. I am a senior partner at Vance, Sterling & Croft. Detective Ortiz suggested I reach out to you."

"A lawyer?" I whispered, glancing at Lily.

"An advocate," Eleanor corrected gently, setting her briefcase on the visitor's chair. "Detective Ortiz informed me of the situation regarding the hit-and-run, the corporate vehicle, and your husband's actions over the past twelve hours. Mrs. Mercer, you are standing at the edge of a war. Your husband and his mistress are currently attempting to construct a legal defense that sacrifices you and framing this as a domestic dispute."

I stood up, stepping away from the bed so as not to wake Lily. "Grant tested Lily's DNA four months ago. He thinks she isn't his."

Eleanor’s expression didn't change, but her eyes hardened slightly. "I read the hospital intake notes. Did Grant tell you why he ran that test?"

"He said he found a document in my old desk," I said, a bitter laugh escaping my throat. "He claimed he had suspicions for years."

Eleanor opened her briefcase and pulled out a thick folder. "Grant didn't find a document, Mrs. Mercer. Vanessa Hale worked as an HR consultant for Northstar Logistics four months ago. She was the one who uploaded a tampered paternity file into Grant's private cloud account."

My breath hitched. "What?"

"Vanessa Hale didn't just stumble into your husband's life," Eleanor stated calmly. "She targeted him. She manipulated him into believing your daughter wasn't his so he would emotionally detach from his family, transfer corporate assets into her vendor accounts, and grant her unlimited access to Northstar’s financial logs."

I looked through the glass wall toward the elevator bank.

"She used him," I whispered. "And when she hit my daughter with that car..."

"...she realized her entire golden goose was about to collapse," Eleanor finished. "Now, Grant is protecting her because he believes he is protecting himself. If Vanessa falls, she will expose every illegal asset transfer Grant made for her over the last four months."

I turned back to look at my daughter, resting under the heavy blankets, breathing through a machine because of two monsters who treated her life like collateral damage.

"Where do we start, Eleanor?" I asked, my voice dropping all traces of fear, leaving only pure, absolute steel.

May you like

Eleanor smiled—a cold, razor-sharp smile.

"First, we freeze his bank accounts," she said. "Second, we make sure he never touches a dime of your daughter's trust. And third... we make sure Grant Mercer and Vanessa Hale spend the rest of their natural lives in a federal penitentiary."
