Chapter 3 - The Freezing of the Empire

The fallout was swift, brutal, and unyielding.
Within twenty-four hours of Grant’s arrest, the story broke across local and national media outlets.
COLUMBUS EXECUTIVE ARRESTED IN HIT-AND-RUN COVER-UP OF DAUGHTER NORTHSTAR LOGISTICS VP CHARGED WITH TAMPERING WITH EVIDENCE
Sitting in Eleanor Vance’s downtown corner office three days later, I watched the news ticker crawl across the television screen. Lily was still in the hospital, but she had been moved to a regular step-down unit, her recovery progressing smoothly under the care of a dedicated trauma team.
"The criminal side is moving fast," Eleanor said, setting a hot cup of tea in front of me. "Grant’s bail was set at $2.5 million. He couldn't pay it."
I looked up, surprised. "He couldn't pay it? Grant makes over $400,000 a year, plus stock options."
Eleanor chuckled—a dry, satisfied sound.
"He made $400,000 a year," she corrected. "Yesterday morning, the Board of Directors at Northstar Logistics held an emergency meeting. They terminated Grant for gross ethical misconduct and corporate asset misuse. Furthermore, they are suing him for $5 million to recover the funds he embezzled for Vanessa Hale."
"Embezzled?"
"Grant was using Northstar vendor accounts to funnel money into Hale Communications," Eleanor explained, sliding a financial ledger toward me. "Over the last eighteen months, Grant transferred approximately $1.2 million of corporate funds to Vanessa. In return, Vanessa was kicking back thirty percent into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands registered under both their names."
I rubbed my temples. "He was stealing from his own company for her."
"Yes. And here is the best part," Eleanor leaned forward, her eyes dancing with tactical delight. "Because those offshore funds were created during your legal marriage using marital and corporate assets, I filed an emergency ex parte motion this morning. The court has frozen every single bank account, stock portfolio, investment property, and offshore asset tied to Grant Mercer and Vanessa Hale."
"So Grant has nothing?"
"Grant is currently sitting in a county jail cell wearing an orange jumpsuit, unable to afford a private defense attorney," Eleanor stated flatly. "The court appointed him a public defender two hours ago."
"And Vanessa?" I asked, my blood running warm with anticipation.
"Vanessa was arrested at a private air hangar in Indianapolis yesterday afternoon while trying to board a charter flight to the Bahamas," Eleanor said. "She has been charged with aggravated vehicular assault, hit-and-run leaving the scene of an accident involving a minor, insurance fraud, and federal wire fraud."
I leaned back in the leather chair, letting the weight of Eleanor’s words sink in.
For four months, I had lived in a house where my husband treated me like a lying stranger and my daughter like a mistake. I had felt powerless, confused, and trapped under his gaslighting and cold indifference.
Now, the truth was out in the blinding sunlight.
"What's our next move?" I asked Eleanor.
"Now, Claire," Eleanor said, pulling out a thick set of legal divorce documents, "we take everything else he has left. We file for full legal and physical custody of Lily, total forfeiture of his remaining estate, and court-ordered restitution for Lily’s medical bills."
"Will he fight it?"

"He can try," Eleanor smiled softly. "But a man fighting a twenty-year prison sentence from a jail cell doesn't have much leverage in family court. Sign here, Claire. Let's finish this."
I picked up the pen and signed my name on the dotted line.
