Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Terrace

Six months later.

The late summer evening air swept softly across the rooftop terrace of the Torino estate in Westchester.

The sky was painted in breathtaking shades of violet, rose, and deep gold as the sun dipped below the horizon.

Below on the lawn, Sophie—now nine years old—was sitting on a wooden bench with Maria, practicing her violin lessons, the sweet, melodic notes floating up through the quiet air.

Elena stood by the stone railing of the terrace, wearing a simple white linen dress that rustled gently in the breeze.

A warm, familiar step sounded behind her.

Vincent walked up, sliding his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin softly on her shoulder, pulling her back against his solid chest.

"You're quiet tonight, my love," Vincent murmured softly against her neck.

Elena covered his hands with hers, taking a deep, contented breath of the fresh evening air.

"I was just thinking about that Tuesday night at Romano's," Elena whispered, turning slightly in his arms to look up into his dark eyes. "I was so terrified when those men broke down my door. I thought my life was over. I thought Sophie would be left alone in the world."

Vincent touched her cheek gently with his thumb, his dark eyes filled with a profound, unshakeable devotion.

"That night was meant to happen, Elena," Vincent said softly. "The universe took two broken paths and brought them together at that corner table."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box.

Elena’s breath caught in her throat. Her hazel eyes widened as she looked from the box up to Vincent's intense, loving face.

"Vincent..." she gasped softly.

Vincent opened the box. Inside sat a magnificent, flawless five-carat emerald-cut diamond ring, set upon a band of platinum, glowing under the twilight sky.

He dropped to one knee on the stone terrace, holding her hand gently in his large, warm fingers.

"Elena Miller," Vincent spoke, his voice rich, steady, and full of deep emotion. "Eight months ago, your daughter ran into a restaurant and asked me to save her mama. Today... I am asking you to save me for the rest of my life. Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled over Elena’s lashes, trailing down her radiant cheeks.

"Yes," Elena wept softly, dropping to her knees beside him, wrapping her arms around his neck. "Yes, Vincent! A thousand times yes!"

Vincent slipped the diamond ring onto her finger, pulled her close against his heart, and kissed her deeply under the starry sky, while down on the lawn, little Sophie looked up, clapped her hands in delight, and ran toward the terrace steps to hug her new family.
