Chapter 7 - Healing in the Light

Three weeks later.

The morning sun broke over the Westchester hills, flooding the sunroom of the Torino estate with warm, golden light.

The air smelled of fresh coffee, toasted brioche, and blooming lilies from the gardens.

Elena sat at a white marble table near the open French doors. Her bruises had faded into faint, barely visible shadows, her shoulder was fully healed, and her eyes held a brightness, a quiet peace that had been absent for four years.

She wore a comfortable cream-colored cashmere sweater, watching her daughter playing on the lawn outside.

Sophie was running through the grass with a golden retriever puppy that Vincent had bought for her the week before, her joyful laughter echoing across the manicured gardens.

The heavy glass doors slid open, and Vincent walked into the sunroom.

He had discarded his formal suits, wearing a charcoal wool sweater and dark trousers. He held two fresh cups of espresso, setting one down in front of Elena before taking his seat across from her.

"How is she doing?" Vincent asked gently, nodding toward Sophie.

"She hasn't had a nightmare in four days," Elena smiled, her hazel eyes warm as she looked at him. "She told me this morning that she wants to stay here forever."

"She can," Vincent said simply, taking a slow sip of his espresso. "This house has sixteen bedrooms, Elena. It’s been empty for too long."

Elena looked down at her coffee cup, her fingers tracing the delicate porcelain rim.

"Vincent... the news said the Moretti syndicate was completely dissolved yesterday," Elena murmured softly. "The papers are calling it a federal miracle. They think the Justice Department did it all on their own."

"Let the feds take the credit," Vincent chuckled softly. "It keeps the news reporters away from my driveway."

Elena looked up at him, her expression turning serious, full of a deep, unshakeable emotion.

"You gave us our lives back, Vincent," Elena whispered, reaching across the table to lay her hand over his. "You cleared my husband's name, you protected my daughter, and you gave us a home when we had nowhere left to run. How do I ever repay a debt like that?"

Vincent turned his hand over, intertwining his fingers with hers, his grip warm, firm, and protective.

"You don't owe me anything, Elena," Vincent said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute sincerity. "Three weeks ago, I was sitting alone at a restaurant table, thinking my life was nothing but business, power, and empty rooms."

He looked out at the lawn, where Sophie was hugging the puppy, then back into Elena's eyes.

"You and Sophie didn't just walk into my life that night," Vincent murmured softly. "You saved me from becoming a ghost."
