Chapter 8 - The Gala at the Plaza

Two months later.
The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was a glittering sea of high society, political leaders, and business tycoons.
The annual Metropolitan Children's Charity Gala was in full swing. The live orchestra played smooth waltzes, crystal chandeliers cast shimmering light across silk gowns and tailored tuxedos, and champagne flowed freely.
Near the central staircase, a low hush swept across the crowd.
Vincent Torino stepped into the ballroom.
He looked majestic, powerful, and utterly dominant in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo. But what drew every eye in the room was the woman on his arm.
Elena Miller looked breathtaking.
She wore a floor-length emerald-green silk dress that draped gracefully over her slender frame. Her dark hair was styled into an elegant updo, held in place by a diamond hairclip that Vincent had given her that morning. She held her head high, her hazel eyes glowing with confidence, grace, and striking beauty.
Beside them walked Maria, holding eight-year-old Sophie's hand. Sophie wore a matching velvet dress, her hair neatly curled, looking like a little princess as she marvelled at the glittering chandeliers.
"Look at them whispering," Maria laughed softly, leaning closer to Elena. "Half the politicians in this room used to tremble when Vincent walked into a room. Now they don't know whether to bow or offer congratulations."
"Let them whisper," Elena smiled, her hand resting comfortably on Vincent’s arm.
As they moved toward the VIP section, a tall, distinguished man in a dark tuxedo approached them—District Attorney Robert Vance, the newly appointed chief prosecutor who had taken down the corrupt network in Brooklyn.
"Mr. Torino," Vance said smoothly, extending his hand. "A pleasure to see you tonight."
"District Attorney Vance," Vincent accepted the handshake firmly. "Allow me to introduce Miss Elena Miller... the new Director of the Torino Foundation for Children."
Vance turned to Elena, his eyes full of genuine respect as he took her hand. "Miss Miller. Your work over the last month in establishing the new citywide youth shelters has been extraordinary. The Governor himself was talking about your program this afternoon."
"Thank you, Mr. Vance," Elena replied, her voice polished, confident, and warm. "We are just getting started."
As Vance moved off to speak with other guests, Vincent leaned down, his lips brushing gently against Elena’s ear.
"Director of the Foundation?" Elena teased softly, looking up at him with amused hazel eyes. "You didn't mention that title in the car."
"It was approved by the board this afternoon," Vincent smiled—a real, captivating smile that softened his sharp features. "And since I own eighty percent of the board, the vote was unanimous."
Elena chuckled, resting her cheek gently against his shoulder as the orchestra began to play a slow, beautiful romantic waltz.

"Dance with me, Mr. Torino," Elena whispered.
Vincent wrapped his arm around her waist, leading her out onto the center of the dance floor under the golden lights of the crystal chandeliers, holding her close as if she were the only person in the entire world.
