Chapter 4 - The Shadows of the Ledger

By midnight, Dr. Vance had finished treating Elena. Her dislocated shoulder was reduced, her cuts were stitched, and a powerful painkiller had eased the sharp agony in her ribs.

She lay propped up against a mountain of silk pillows on the master bed, wearing a soft wool sweater Maria had provided. Sophie was fast asleep beside her, her small hand firmly gripping Elena’s sleeve even in her sleep.

The bedroom door opened softly, and Vincent stepped inside, carrying two cups of steaming chamomile tea.

He set one cup on the bedside table and pulled a velvet armchair closer to the bed, sitting down with quiet grace.

"You should be resting," Vincent said softly.

Elena looked at him. In the warm light of the bedside lamp, she took in his appearance—the sharp, immaculate jawline, the dark eyes that held a terrifying intellect, and the quiet, heavy authority that seemed to radiate from every fiber of his being.

"I can't sleep," Elena whispered, her voice still raspy. "Every time I close my eyes, I hear Gianni’s voice... I hear the door breaking."

She reached out, her fingers lightly touching the edge of the tea cup.

"Thank you, Vincent," she said, looking straight into his eyes. "You don't know me. We never even made it to our appetizer... and you risked a war with the Moretti family for us."

"Maria told me about you six months ago," Vincent revealed, his voice low and steady. "She said you were a woman who worked sixteen hours a day to keep a roof over her daughter's head. She said you were too proud to ask anyone for help, even when the world was pressing down on your neck."

He leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees.

"I didn't risk a war for a stranger, Elena. I protected a woman who deserved to be protected."

Elena swallowed hard, her eyes brimming with fresh tears. She reached out, her hand trembling slightly as she touched the leather sleeve of his jacket.

"Gianni was looking for a ledger," Elena said quietly. "My late husband... Julian. He worked as an auditor for the Moretti family front companies four years ago. Before he was killed, he realized they were going to erase him to cover up their money laundering. He hid an encrypted flash drive inside Sophie’s stuffed bear."

Vincent’s dark eyes narrowed slightly. "Inside the child's toy?"

"Julian knew they'd search our apartment, our bank boxes, my workplace," Elena explained. "He knew they'd never look inside a battered old teddy bear that a four-year-old carried to park every day."

She looked down at Sophie, who was hugging a worn, brown velvet bear against her chest.

"That drive doesn't just have the Moretti accounts," Elena whispered. "It has the routing numbers for their federal payoffs, their union extortion files, and the names of three supreme court judges on their payroll. It’s the entire blueprint of their empire."

Vincent stared at the small stuffed bear in the sleeping child's arms.

"Gianni thought he was kidnapping a helpless woman to find a lost ledger," Vincent said, a dark, amused smile touching the corners of his mouth. "He didn't realize he was handing me the key to his family's execution."

He stood up smoothly, reaching down to gently tuck the silk blanket higher around Elena’s shoulders.

"Rest, Elena," Vincent said softly. "Tomorrow, we take that drive... and we burn the Moretti family to the ground."
