Chapter 9 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

Healing didn't happen overnight.
When we returned home from the hospital and court proceedings, Eli had nightmares for the first few months. He would wake up crying, checking to see if the doors were locked, terrified that his grandmother or aunt would appear from the shadows.
I resigned from my high-stress corporate job that required frequent travel and took a remote position with a family-oriented firm that gave me complete control over my schedule. Every afternoon at 3:00 p.m., I was at the school gate waiting for Eli.
We started seeing a wonderful child therapist named Dr. Clara Vance. Slowly, through art therapy and play, Eli began to process his trauma.
He painted pictures of sunshine, big green trees, and armored dinosaurs protecting a small house.
"Look, Mommy," Eli said one sunny afternoon, six months after the trial, holding up a bright watercolor painting. "This is our shield. Nothing bad can break through it."

"It's beautiful, Eli," I said, hugging him tightly. "And it's completely unbreakable."
We also adopted a rescue Golden Retriever puppy named Barnaby. Barnaby slept at the foot of Eli’s bed every single night, providing a comforting, warm presence that chased away the remaining shadows of the past. Eli’s laugh, once quiet and hesitant, returned full and vibrant, filling our home with light again.
