Chapter 2 - Uncovering the Wounds

The first 48 hours were a blur of alarms, blood draws, and endless waiting. The pediatric surgeon, Dr. Aris Thorne, called me into a private consultation room on the second evening. He pulled up Eli's X-rays on an illuminated board, pointing to several hairline fractures along Eli’s left arm and ribs.

"Ms. Mercer, as a medical professional, I am mandated to report clear signs of child abuse," Dr. Thorne explained carefully. "The fractures in Eli's arm show different stages of healing. Some of these injuries happened days before his admission, while the abdominal trauma happened the night he was brought in."

I covered my mouth, horror washing over me in waves. "Different stages? But... he was only with them for three days!"

"Which means the abuse was frequent and severe during that window," Dr. Thorne said gently. "The internal bleeding was caused by a massive impact to his abdomen—likely a direct blow or kick."

My stomach turned. My own mother. My sister. People who had held him when he was a baby, who had smiled at his birthday parties—they had brutalized him.

While I sat by Eli’s bedside holding his cold, uninjured hand, Detective Miller returned with an investigator from Child Protective Services, a sharp-eyed woman named Brenda Vance.

"We searched your mother's house today with a warrant," Brenda told me, her voice clipped and professional. "We found locked doors with deadbolts installed on the outside of the guest bedroom where Eli was staying. We also retrieved security footage from a neighbor's driveway camera that captures part of Eleanor's backyard."

"What did it show?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Detective Miller leaned in, his tone grave. "It shows Vanessa dragging Eli out into the cold at 9:00 p.m., wearing only his pajamas. She locked him out near the shed. When he tried to knock on the door, your mother came out, struck him, and threw his coat into the mud."

Tears spilled over my cheeks. I squeezed Eli’s hand tight, whispering apologies over and over. "Why?" I sobbed. "Why would they do this to a helpless child?"

"We're looking into motives," Miller said. "And we found something interesting regarding your late father’s estate and Eli's trust fund."
