Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

One year after that dark night in Denver, the sun rose over a quiet beach on the Oregon coast.
I sat on a wooden bench wrapped in a warm blanket, holding a mug of coffee. The ocean waves crashed gently against the shore, tossing sea foam onto the damp sand.
A few yards away, Eli was running in the wet sand with Barnaby, chasing the seagulls and laughing hysterically as the puppy tried to catch the foam. Eli was seven now—taller, healthy, his cheeks rosy with life, and his spirit entirely restored. The cast was long gone, replaced by strong, active limbs that never stopped moving.
I looked at my son, feeling a profound sense of peace wash over me.
We had walked through the deepest valley of betrayal and horror, faced down the darkest side of human nature, and emerged victorious on the other side. My mother and sister were locked away where they could never harm anyone again, and their cruelty had failed to break the bond between me and my son.
Eli turned around, caught my eye, and waved his arm frantically in the air.
"Mommy! Look! I found a huge shell!" he shouted over the sound of the ocean waves, running toward me with his broad, bright smile.
"Show me, baby!" I called back, standing up and opening my arms wide.

He ran into my arms, throwing his small hands around my neck. I lifted him up, spinning him around while Barnaby barked happily around our feet.
The nightmare was finally over. The wounds were healed, the truth had triumphed, and as the morning sun broke through the coastal mist, painting the horizon in shades of gold and rose, I knew that our future was filled with nothing but light, safety, and unconditional love.
