Chapter 1 - The ICU Confrontation

The air in the Intensive Care Unit felt heavy, thick with the sharp tang of antiseptic and the persistent, rhythmic hum of heart monitors. I stood pressed against the glass window, watching Eli’s fragile chest rise and fall. He looked so small beneath the maze of medical tubing, his soft cheek bruised purple and blue. Tears blurred my vision, but I forced myself to stay upright. Detective Miller was beside me, taking notes, when heavy, hurried footsteps echoed down the tiled hallway.

I turned around. My heart seized in my chest.

Walking toward us was my mother, Eleanor, flanked by my sister, Vanessa. They didn't look remorseful. They didn't look like family members consumed by grief. Eleanor’s face was twisted in rage, and Vanessa carried a cold, haughty sneer.

"Natalie!" Eleanor spat, her voice ringing out so loudly that a floor nurse immediately stepped forward to shush her. "How dare you drag the police into our family matters! You irresponsible, selfish girl!"

"Mother?" The word felt like ash in my mouth. "Eli is in critical condition. He has broken ribs and internal bleeding!"

"And who left him?" Vanessa interrupted sharply, crossing her arms. "You abandoned him for your corporate dinner! You put your career ahead of your child, and now you want to play the grieving mother?"

"He fell because he was hyperactive!" Eleanor yelled, taking two steps toward me, completely unbothered by the patients resting nearby. "He’s a nightmare to watch! We tried to discipline him, but he ran off like a lunatic! If anything happened to him, it's on your head!"

"Discipline him?" Detective Miller stepped firmly between us, his tall frame cutting off my mother's advance. "Ma'am, I suggest you lower your voice. This child suffered severe blunt force trauma that does not align with a fall from a shed. And according to your neighbor, Mr. Henderson, the boy was locked outside in the freezing cold for hours before he collapsed."

Eleanor’s face flushed red, but Vanessa didn't flinch. "That old man is senile," Vanessa hissed. "Natalie, if you proceed with this witch hunt against your own blood, you’ll regret it. We gave up our holiday to help you, and this is how you repay us?"

"Get out," I whispered. The tremor in my voice was gone, replaced by an icy resolve I didn't know I possessed. "Get out of this hospital right now."

"You can't talk to your mother like that!" Eleanor shrieked.

"I can, and I am," I said, stepping past Detective Miller to look Eleanor dead in the eye. "If you take one step closer to my son, I will have the officers arrest you on the spot. You laughter on the phone was the last piece of humanity you had left, and you threw it away."

Two hospital security guards approached, summoned by the charge nurse. Seeing the security personnel and the detective's hand resting near his badge, Eleanor sneered, smoothed her coat, and turned on her heel.

"You've chosen your path, Natalie," Vanessa sneered over her shoulder. "Don't come crawling back when you realize you can't handle this alone."

As they disappeared down the corridor, I collapsed into a chair, shaking violently. Detective Miller knelt beside me, his expression softening. "We're launching a full criminal investigation, Ms. Mercer. You just focus on your son."
