Chapter 3 - The Dark Motive

The piece of the puzzle I had been missing finally began to surface. Two years prior, my father had passed away, leaving his considerable estate divided in a very specific way. Because of my mother’s chronic gambling habits and Vanessa’s history of reckless financial spending, my father had bypassed them for the bulk of his liquid assets, placing a $2 million trust directly in Eli’s name, with me as the sole custodian until Eli turned twenty-five.
However, there was a dark clause in the will that I had forgotten in my grief: if Eli were to pass away before reaching adulthood without surviving direct descendants, the trust fund would default equally to my mother and sister.
"They didn't just dislike Eli," Detective Miller said during a meeting in the hospital cafeteria. "They wanted to create a situation where an 'accidental death' or fatal negligence would trigger the clause in the trust."
"They were trying to kill my son for money," I said, the horrific truth settling in.
"It appears that way," Miller acknowledged. "They deliberately delayed calling emergency services after injuring him. If Mr. Henderson hadn't called 911 when he saw Eli collapsed in the yard, your son wouldn't have survived the night."
My shock morphed into a fierce, blinding rage. All those years of subtle emotional abuse, the guilt trips my mother laid on me, the constant demands for financial help—it had all culminated in this monstrous plot against my innocent child.
I returned to Eli’s room with a newfound determination. I wasn't just a mother grieving by a bedside anymore; I was a protector preparing for war.

As I sat down, Eli’s fingers twitched slightly within mine. His eyelids fluttered, and a tiny, raspy voice broke the quiet of the room.
"Mommy...?"
