Chapter 4 - The Truth Behind the Fall

"Lily, wait!" Ethan called out, sitting up straight in his bed despite the sting of his IV lines. "Dad, don't let her leave!"

Arthur stepped between Lily and the door, gently blocking her path without touching her. "Victoria, leave us. Now. We will discuss board matters at the office tomorrow."

Victoria’s posture stiffened, her eyes narrowing as she looked at Arthur, then at Lily. "As you wish, Arthur. But remember... the annual shareholder meeting is in three days. You cannot afford distractions." She turned on her heel and swept out of the room, her entourage following closely behind.

Once the doors closed, Lily looked up at Arthur. "She's the one."

Arthur froze. "What did you say?"

"The woman," Lily said, her voice dropping to a whisper as she recalled the ruthless street logic that kept her alive for months. "She looked at Ethan like he was a math problem she couldn't solve, and she looked at me like I was a leak in her roof. She isn't glad Ethan is alive. She's furious."

Ethan nodded rapidly from the bed. "Dad, the voice I heard in the van yesterday... before I jumped out... the kidnapper was on the phone with a woman. She kept telling him to make sure there were no traces left behind. She said 'Vance International belongs to those who built it, not a sick child'."

Arthur felt a chill run down his spine that had nothing to do with the winter weather outside. He walked over to the window overlooking the gray skyline of New York City, his hands clenching into tight fists. He had suspected internal betrayal, but hearing it confirmed by his own son and an eleven-year-old orphan made the reality terrifyingly real.

"Victoria has been trying to force a vote of no confidence against me for six months," Arthur said quietly, speaking as much to himself as to the children. "If Ethan had vanished... I would have been destroyed. I would have stepped down, giving her total control of the corporation."

He turned back to face Lily, his expression transformed by a powerful, unshakeable resolve. "Lily, you are not safe going back to the streets. Victoria knows you saw her reaction, and she knows you saved Ethan. My estate in Upstate New York is fully secured. I want you to come with us."

"I don't belong in a castle, Mr. Vance," Lily replied, shaking her head. "I belong nowhere."

"Then let us give you a place," Arthur said softly.
