Chapter 3 - Whispers and Enemies

By morning, the sanctuary of the hospital was breached not by violence, but by the sharp, polished elegance of high society.
The heavy doors to the suite swung open, revealing a woman in a tailored ivory suit, her blond hair swept into a flawless chignon. She carried an air of effortless authority, but her sharp blue eyes flicked over the room with cold calculation. Behind her stood two men in sharp gray suits carrying leather briefcases.
"Arthur," the woman said, her voice dripping with practiced concern as she stepped into the room. "Thank God Ethan is safe. The board of directors has been in an absolute panic since midnight. The stock prices are dropping because of rumors about a security breach!"
"Victoria," Arthur said, his tone devoid of warmth. He did not stand up from his chair beside Ethan's bed. "I explicitly ordered my staff to keep the board uninformed until I had secured my son."
Victoria Vance, Arthur’s late brother's widow and the chief operating officer of Vance International, swept her gaze across the room until it landed directly on Lily. Her lips curled into a subtle, disdainful sneer as she looked at the young girl wrapped in oversized fleece.
"And who, pray tell, is this?" Victoria asked, gesturing vaguely toward Lily with a manicured hand. "Arthur, the press is already gathering outside the main entrance. You cannot have street children lounging in a high-security private wing. It looks terrible for the company's image."
"This 'street child' saved your nephew's life, Victoria," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register that made even the bodyguards outside the door stiffen. "If Lily had not found him, Ethan would be dead. She gave him her own coat while she froze in the dark."
Victoria paused, a flicker of something dark and dangerous crossing her eyes before she recovered her composure with a sharp, artificial laugh. "Oh... how precious. A little guardian angel from the gutters. Well, of course we will write her a generous check. A few thousand dollars should be more than enough to compensate her for her troubles and send her on her way."
Lily stood up from her chair. The luxury of the room suddenly felt like a trap, the air thick with poison. She pulled her new winter jacket tightly around herself, staring Victoria straight in the eyes without flinching.

"Keep your money," Lily said coldly. "I didn't save Ethan for a check."
She turned toward the door, her heart hammering against her ribs. She knew that look in Victoria's eyes. It was the look of a predator evaluating an obstacle.
