Chapter 12 - The Hidden Legacy

The morning after the celebration, an ominous quiet hung over the Vance estate. Though the summer sun was bright, heavy security vehicles were now stationed along the perimeter, and armed guards discreetly patrolled the manicured lawns. Arthur had summoned the estate’s lead legal counsel, while Lily spent her morning in the private library, searching through the personal journal of her late father, David Miller, which had been recovered from the state evidence locker three days prior.

The journal was a thick, leather-bound book filled with her father’s intricate handwriting, detailed blueprints, and notes on business transactions. To the state prosecutors, it had merely been proof that Victoria had framed David for embezzling funds. But to Lily, who spent hours studying every line, something felt incomplete.

As she turned to the very last page, she felt a slight roughness in the paper. The back cover was unusually thick. Using a small silver letter opener from the desk, she gently sliced along the edge of the leather backing. The lining peeled away to reveal a hidden compartment containing a tiny, brass key stamped with a three-digit number: 314. Beside the key was a hand-written note from her father, dated just weeks before his tragic imprisonment.

To my beloved Lily, the note read. If you are reading this, the worst has happened, but truth cannot be buried forever. Victoria was merely a puppet for the Vance Syndicate’s silent board—specifically Julian Vance and Director Charles Sterling. The money they stole wasn't just hoarded; it was used to buy silence at the highest levels of government. Key 314 opens a safe deposit box at the Manhattan Vault Syndicate on 5th Avenue. Inside lies the master ledger. Keep yourself safe, my sweet girl.

Lily’s heart hammered against her ribs. Director Charles Sterling was one of Arthur Vance’s closest personal friends and the current vice-chairman of Vance Enterprises. He had been present at the celebration yesterday, sitting right beside Arthur, smiling as he congratulated Lily on her adoption.

"He was in our house," Lily whispered aloud, a chill running down her spine. "He sat at our table."

Before she could stand up to find Arthur, the heavy library doors clicked open. Lily instinctively shoved the brass key into her pocket and slid her father’s journal beneath a stack of oversized art books on the desk.

"Searching for light reading, my dear?" a rich, smooth voice echoed through the high-ceilinged room.

Lily turned around slowly. Standing in the doorway, wearing a tailored gray suit with a gold pocket watch chain, was Charles Sterling. He held a crystal glass of water, his warm, benevolent smile not reaching his cold, calculating eyes.
