Chapter 2 - The Gilded Cage

The private floor of Mount Sinai Hospital was quieter than any place Lily had ever known. There were no sirens, no shouting, no dripping water from overhead pipes—only the soft hum of medical monitors and the thick, plush carpets that swallowed the sound of footsteps.

Lily sat on the edge of a velvet armchair in the corner of Ethan's massive private suite, feeling entirely out of place. She was wrapped in a heavy fleece blanket, her dirt-stained hands holding a steaming mug of hot chocolate that felt like a miracle against her cracked palms. A female doctor had already cleaned and bandaged the minor scrapes on her feet, treating her with a gentle respect that left Lily completely bewildered.

Across the room, Ethan lay in a high-tech hospital bed, IV lines hooked to his arm, but his color had returned. A warm flush pinked his cheeks, and he was watching Lily with a bright, persistent grin.

"You're really quiet," Ethan noted, taking a sip of soup from his tray. "My dad says people who are quiet are usually thinking about ten things at once."

"I'm just waiting," Lily said plainly, her dark eyes scanning the heavy oak doors. "People don't give away hot chocolate and heated blankets for free. Eventually, someone comes in with a bill or a cop."

Arthur Vance stepped into the room at that exact moment, carrying a stack of papers and a soft leather bag. He caught the end of her sentence and paused, a look of profound sorrow passing over his refined features before he cleared his throat and smiled.

"No cops, Lily. And no bills," Arthur said, placing the bag on the sofa next to her. "Inside here are clean clothes, a winter jacket that actually fits, and a fresh pair of boots. You're safe here."

"Why was Ethan alone in the park?" Lily asked abruptly, her street-sharp instincts taking over. "A kid like him... with a rich dad... doesn't just end up half-frozen near a drain in Central Park at night. Someone left him there."

The atmosphere in the luxurious room instantly plunged toward sub-zero. Arthur’s hands tightened around the leather strap of his bag, his jaw setting into a hard, dangerous line. He exchanged a brief, heavy look with his son before turning back to Lily.

"You're far too perceptive for an eleven-year-old," Arthur said grimly. "And you're right. Ethan didn't wander off. He was taken from his school grounds this morning by someone who bypassed our security protocols. Someone who knew our schedule, our codes, and our routes."

Lily set her mug down on the glass table, her pulse quickening. "A kidnapping?"

"An attempted one," Arthur corrected, his voice dripping with icy venom. "They demanded a ransom, but before the drop could be made, something went wrong. Ethan managed to escape his captors, but he fell down the ravine near the monument and broke his ankle. They left him to freeze, thinking the cold would finish what they started."

Ethan shuddered, pulling his blanket higher. "I heard them talking before I ran. They said... they said someone inside Vance International paid them to make sure I never came home."
